When Is The Time Right .... To Offer Chris Powell A New Contract?

In my view he needs to be offered a three year deal right now. He has been hampered this season with lack of resources and looks likely to achieve mid table in the Championship with effectively a division one team. He is adored by the fans and it would seem the players as well. Give him the wherewithal to improve this squad by 25% and I think we can move forward into serious challengers for the playoffs. Having things hanging in the balance is no use to anyone. Sign him up now.

How many more times - this is not a third division / League 1 squad! Not only did we win League one but we are ahead of the two other promoted teams even after giving Sheffield Wednesday 6 points... As per the fans scores, some players have slotted into this league and some have struggled. It's not like you would say that Wolves or Blackburn have Premier league squads as they race each other down to the bottom of the Championship!

Changing managers now would be a bit nuts given that Chris Powell assembled the squad and then pushed/pulled them through this season - some games have been disappointing and some selections / substitutions open to question but we have a squad which clearly works and that says it all about the management team - we are just 5 goals away from the boards ambition of 8-11th place and 1 point off 9th.

The big question is whether the club has the finances to keep the squad together, re-sign the right players whose contracts expire this summer and add where there is affordable talent available to add to the depth and flare in certain areas...I am no expert on footy and the transfer market but I don't think it will take much more for CAFC to push on and up into the top six next season. This squad will have 500 more championship appearances behind them (less whoever leaves) compared to this time last year and could well surprise a few next season... from what I hear the atmosphere at the training ground is a hell of a lot better since securing 7 points from 3 games and I trust that this form will continue until the end of season.

Put it another way: Not retaining the management and not strengthening the squad is going to ensure that it takes far, far longer to get back to the Premier League and at £7M a year that sounds expensive!

Being of the "we're not safe til we're mathematically safe" persuasion I could understand if the board wanted to wait until that happened before offering Chris a new contract. However, I've been a bit concerned about Leicester too over the last few weeks, so I'd agree with sorting it out sooner rather than later.

He has to be signed up now, cause I suspect eyes are being cast from Leicester in his direction, and he'll get serious backing there.

Problem is if they have a serious wedge then they will come for him anyway, if he is their target. That said, CP would see it as a sign of faith if he were offered a contract and may turn away other offers.

Of course, if TJ is about to sell then he may not wish to encumber the new owners with a contracted manager who for subjective reasons they may wish to remove from office.
That's true but at the same time any new owners might be concerned with the manager (who is a good fit) being out of contract soon.
  • I wouldn't underestimate Chris's loyalty to Charlton. If he accepted an offer from elsewhere it would not be a financial choice, in my opinion, either personal or in terms of the resources available to him.

My points about the wedge is more about a contract won't dissuade anyone from coming in. In terms of CP a new contract would show him after a season of speculation and rumours regarding his relationship that the board hsve faith.

True and we don't know who the new owners could be. They may be a Watford and dispense with the service of a man doing a decent job for their own man (as we also did) or they may keep faith and judge on results.

  • Leicester owners will want a big name like O'Neil if they sack Pearson

Anyone who thinks that the current squad is anything other than a fundamentally league one squad is deluding themselves.

Agree. Or even Kenny Jacket! Would I not like that!

SCP is too inexperienced for a club that want to go up next year.

The time to extend the contract is at the end of the season so that players who want to come and play for him know that he is committed to the club.

I think Leicester would want a bigger 'name' (in their eyes anyway)

  • I think CP has to much respect for Pearson t replace him.

This squad demolished league one, with one of the highest points totals in the league's history, and are now placed in midtable in the championship. As such it is in no way deluded to disagree that we have a fundamentally league one squad. Sure we are lacking in certain areas, but this squad have proven themselves to be above league one quality

    Don't f*** about.

Do a Newcastle and sign him up on a ten year.

No manager is good for a 10 year contract.
I'd offer a rolling contract that ALWAYS has 2 years left to run. That way he knows he's always safe and if anyone comes sniffing they'll have to pay compo!

I'm not sure what difference it makes. If we stay up, we stay up, I want to keep the man who has delivered on his targets for two seasons running. If everything goes pear shaped and we somehow got relegated, then who would be better at getting us promoted again? CP has proved, by a record margin, that he can do this. Relegation (if it were to happen, and I very much doubt it) may be a reason to think about a change in 2014, but not now.
  • I think people saying Powell is too inexperienced & not a big enough name for Leicester maybe wrong, because they are ignoring his Leicester connections & the fact that their fans love him as well. Although I agree he wouldn't necessarily be strong favourite. I'd like to think he'd reject any offer from them, but if our prospects are poor & their's are good, who knows.

This. SCP will be far more aware of what's going on behind the scenes at the club and where we only speculate as to his relationship with "the owner" he will know exactly where he stands in terms of backing both financially and in security. If the picture is not that bright who could blame him for jumping ship for the things we cannot / will not offer.

  • Can anyone remember back , did Lenny leave for Boro for bigger wages and transfer budget, and also the fact he was fed up of selling our best players each year?

Yes - didn't he meet with the Boro directors to negoatiate the sale of Robert Lee, then ended up leaving us himself?!

  • Ah ,thanks Weegie.
  • edited April 2013
lennie was arranging for Alan Kernaghan's loan to be extended or something possibly Colin Walsh was already involved cos he had done the loan deal in the opposite direction when he ended up leaving himself

lennie was boro manager and bid for robert lee...... that was when Lennie dropped in my estimations with his derisory bid of £250k to us as we were preparing to go back to The Valley
  • Thanks, oohaah - you have a better memory than me!

  • the bid for robert lee is what has bugged me ever since cos of how much lennie knew of our financial situation and that we were desperate for the dough to get back to The Valley and he stuck a joke bid in ... i wasn't expecting an over the top bid but 250k was an insult

...... and no i just wont let it lie aaaaaah
  • Thanks ooey, didn't we get 750k in the end?
  • Yesterday.
  • If we had to wait until yesterday to get the 750k that's a disgrace.
  • Anyone who thinks that the current squad is anything other than a fundamentally league one squad is deluding themselves.

league one squad sounds like a bit of an insult thrown around by quite a few on here after one our many poor home performances - so yesterday! Well up until we had played everyone once we simply didn't know. But I've seen enough home and away to say the players are in the right division - they had better be as they are probably on Championship wages!

At what point do people stop calling them League One / Third division?
When we get offers for some from bigger clubs?
When we finish mid table in the Championship?
When 5-8 players who haven't made the grade are let go this summer?
Or when (with the right acquisitions and retentions) we climb up a few places next season???

There are clearly players who haven't made it but there are also players who would get a place in most teams in this division. And they are our players!

This squad and management has made its targets for the second year running give or take a point... If the board can find the cash to fund their three year plan then we will be top six before we know it!

I would have thought it makes sense to all sides to fund the next push and add to what we have already - it adds value to the club to the management credibility and to the players careers. As we have all seen playing "sack the manager" only ends up in a worse result - in some cases like Blackburn a more expensive and rapid demise than our own a few years back...

Put another way Swansea picked up £5M for their management team from Liverpool and then went on to recruit Michael Laudrup - looks a sensible approach to me

  • If Leicster don't go up this season they'll 100% be looking for a new manager in the summer IMO and CP will certainly be one they'll look at

Can't believe people think Leicester would be in for Powell if and when they sack Pearson.

Not a chance. O'neil or someone of that stature will be brought in there.

No doubt in my mind that if we get taken over Powell will be gone and I have to say that I genuinelly don't believe TJ rates Powell.

God knows who TJ has his eye on.
