I'm fedup.

edited October 2012 in General Charlton
Let me start by saying that in my kitchen we have a treasured photo of Chris Powell with my two Grandsons. I am however totally fed up with CP constantly telling us that we have to win home games, and then sending out the wrong team ( in my opinion ) to play the wrong tactics. CP obviously has the hang of picking up away points probably due to his excellent career as a player, but he hasn't got a clue about winning at home. 551 when you have just lured 26,000 to the game is a nonsense. At my last game ( Saturdays only ) we had a corner in the last minute desperatley needing a goal, giant striker Michael Smith on the bench, and who does CP bring on ? A left back !

My depression started pre season at Gillingham, when not only did we have to watch them losing ( not a great problem pre season ), but watch them being out played by a well coached team. Yesterday Barnsley gave us a lesson in finding space and finding the pass. At the moment our coaching and tactics cannot cut the mustard, I fear that we could be heading back to League One. The departures of Varney and Everitt are a clear warning, something needs to change.

  • 5 5 1 - did we play with 12 players then
  • Where did you go to School ?
  • Well mate everyone knows you don't count keeper when talking formations

    4-5-1
    4-4-2
    3-5-1

    You with me
  • Has anyone got the actual statistics for this season so far? Apparently teams are doing better away from home than at home this season. Granpa, it is such a shame that you didn't turn up at Ashford to put your questions to CP in person rather than allow them to fester. He did in fact cover the very points you make, but maybe you are not in a mood to listen at the mo?

Nobody really wants to see their team playing 4-5-1 at home, but I felt we looked more able to cope with Barnsley using that formation. I can understand why CP used it - he needs to stop the rot.
  • Obviously you are not in the mood to enlighten me.
  • 4-5-1 doesn't have to be negative, it could be really exciting.

Either way, whenever we've played 4-4-2 without Yann (sometimes with him) we've tended to get overrun in midfield.

Points are more important to me than entertainment.
  • SE9, my points were about lack of points not lack of entertainment. For me there is only one absolute priority this season, which is to avoid relegation.
  • The worrying element is that we were overrun in midfield even with 5 there. I think it's less of a formation issue and more of a hoofball issue. If we have the ball in midfield we tend to work it wide reasonably well (although yesterday we had very few players attacking the box for crosses) but when we have the ball in defensive areas the midfield is completely bypassed by too many ineffective long balls. It worked better with yann because at least he'd win most headers but even then the communication and people getting on the end of the flick on wasn't great.
It seemed that barnsleys movement in midfield was a different class to ours yesterday - they often had players in space while also doing an excellent job of leaving us option less when we turned the ball over.
  • Well constructed Ross.

  • I don't know why Razak got subbed, sure he was showboating a tad too much rather than actually cutting into the box but a few stern words at half time could have sorted that. However my faith in Chris is unshaken, he'll see us alright.

    Our 4-5-1 is far from exciting. I much prefer us playing 4-4-2 or a 3 - 5 - 2 .
  • I don't get the regular bringing on of Pritchard when we need a goal. Don't get me wrong I like the guy for his effort & commitment, but to create or score a goal when we are up against it, with time against us, I really don't get it.

More crosses from Pritchard than Green yesterday I think... that said they were pretty poor. At the risk of derailing the thread surely if Green is flagging/injured Wagstaff would be the logical choice? He's got pace, he gets goals, he won't give up.
  • Good post Grandpa. Nothing there I disagree with. I've usually cheered up by this time on a Sunday after we've lost but I feel very deflated by yesterdays performance. Big Yann missing is starting to hurt.
  • HEAVENS yesterday was hard work. We never looked likely to score did we? Like Granpa I have a special place for Mr Powell, however I cannot understand 2 things about him as Manager. A. Why does he have to be so black and white about players? It would appear that you are either in or out. Hayes, Benson, Clarke are good examples. As to why Sullivan has been exited stage left for Button when we are meant to be to be skint god alone knows. And before I get a load of nonsense about the strikers mentioned not being good enough-look at what they have done away from the Valley. My point is they were not given a chance to prove their worth. B. Wilson has played well and this point is not in any way directed at him. Chris Solly is a terrific player, one of the best I have ever seen in Charlton shirt. His position is R Back. Why is he playing L Back when we have a capable, (I assume), L Back in Evina. If Evina is not capable why is he on the bench. Solly playing on the left robs us of so much in terms of balance and attcking verve.

    COME ON YOU ADDICKS

  • Grandpa, welcome to come to North West Kent Addicks on 22nd November and put your questions to SCP.

Did you see clarke and to a lesser extent benson play? They were poor. Clarke has as much energy and movementtas an 80 year old.

I agree solly should not be playing left back however can you see a problem that we are relying on our full backs to create goals!?
  • Hollands, Jackson, Pritchard, Green, Stephens. All league 1 players. Simple as that.

  • Add BWP, Wilson, Hamer to that list.

    Disagree.
  • I don't think they would get in any other championships team.
  • Wilson was our best player
The only one who looked confident to take on their man
All the rest looked scared like they knew they were out of their depth

So true. Bar maybe Fuller and Solly. We really do need the latter back on the right, and I'd be happy to see Wilson tried as right mid.

But how many chances did Clarke get? I'm not sure we can afford to write someone off after 2 games. And there wasn't exactly much energy and movement out there on Saturday.

I agree about Button, bringing in a 3rd keeper, when we also have young Pope on the books, seemed odd when we were more deficient elsewhere, and cash presumably is limited
  • Do you think that the reason the team are not doing so well has more to do with off the field matters? IMO there are problems off the field and so there are problems on the field.

  • " I agree about Button, bringing in a 3rd keeper, when we also have young Pope on the books, seemed odd when we were more deficient elsewhere, and cash presumably is limited ".

Sadly forget limited. Speaking to a customer who has a friend working for the Club, we are skint. This perhaps also links to Loco's comment above.
