Away games - weekends or midweek

edited October 2012 in General Charlton
Just wondering what preference people have. Sounds a straight forward question and stats will back up Saturday afternoon being most popular.

But thinking about it last night, the vast majority of what I look back on as memorable away trips were virtually all midweekers.

From when I started doing regular aways just over 20 years ago, I can think off the top of my head of some cracking midweek trips i've had

- Port Vale with Gritty getting a late equaliser

- Blackburn, Newcastle, Liverpool, Boro in cup games

- Walsall in promotion season live on sky, scoring 4 or 5

- Burnley for the rearranged game, when everyone went to Preston when it was called off

- 2-2 Huddersfield mid 90s

- Random trip to West Brom with @all_thaid_up driving, 1-0 Bartlett winner, very drunk

- Southend Friday night couple of years ago

And many more.

Looking back, how is the split between midweeks and sat afternoons on your more memorable aways ?

  • Really enjoyed going to a few away day mondays in the 2003/04 season when we beat birmingham and blackburn.
  • Remember Oldham away in about 1990 eerily had lost the first few away games Oldham were top of the league and we drew 1-1 that was also back in the days when we had a coach pick up at the fox under the hill.
  • Think it all depends on if I have a day off the next day ;)
  • Nothing repeat nothing will beat an away cup tie in Bristol on a Sunday....
  • Have had some memorable evening ones but must say most of my highlights have come on Saturdays. Coventry away in the cup in 2000 stands out.

I was a bit young to travel away to most of the ones AFKA referred to but even some of the best away midweeks I've done are always overshadowed to an extent by the effort of trekking home late at night with work in the morning etc. There's nothing like getting back into London on a Saturday night after a victory, Charlton fans pouring off the trains with red army ringing out, and then getting straight on it to celebrate.
  • Enjoy them both really.

If doing an overnighter (generally anything more than 3 hours away) the drive back is always easier on a Sunday than a weekday and you do tend to spend more quality time with your mates for the Saturday games as you get a decent evening out togehter.
  • i really enjoy winning away under the lights. mid winter is good on a saturday when its dark at half time away from home.
  • Have to say the weekend away game because of the ease of getting home at the earlier time, however a couple of night away games spring to mind, Grimsby away on a Friday night 4-2 win with the last coach arriving with about 5 minutes to go.

Everton away can't remember the score but we lost, big accident on the M1 going north on the way home, slowed up because of the rubber neckers and watching in slow motion as the car following skidded past my car and hit 2 on the inside before rebounding of them into the now stopped car in front of, leaving me, my boy and my car totally unscathed. Got out my car and glanced over to the north bound carriageway to see a row of full body bags laid out from the other accident, amazing escape, just goes to show what can happen.

Finally Chesterfield away last year, remember the nice ground, nice people and one of the best performances of the season.
  • Weekends all day long for me, start drinking 9am ish, pub before mid day, off out in London after a few cans on the train. We also go to a football match aswell!

Midweek, you've normally got work etc.

Southend on that Friday was brilliant though.
  • Add Bradford away in cup replay, midweek all day long for me, Blackburn away was brilliant turned up for work (Nat West) pissed as a fart.
