All over the Cort

edited October 2012 in General Charlton
Just wanted to say how impressed I have been with Leon Cort so far this season.

The guy has proved exactly what we need at the back. This league so far has been a lot more physical than I was expecting, and Leon has been excelling in this for me. He's big, strong, great in the air, a real threat in the opposing box, and forming a decent little partnership with Morrison.

We've a few younger, inexperienced players in our squad, and Leon is just what we need at the heart of the back.

What has impressed me the most though is when you look back on last season.

Leon arrived at the club a Championship player, and has shown clearly in the opening ten games that this is his level. It must have been hugely frustrating not being able to get in that side for virtually all season, yet as far as I'm aware he didn't rock the boat, kept his councel and got his head down on the training ground without making any fuss.

Cracking pro, getting his reward now.

  • It's rare he doesn't win a header.
  • Agree with AFKA, superb signing by Powell.

Also Powell kept his word by saying this year would be Cort's year when Cort was on the sideline for so long.
  • Totally agree Smudge, he is quality.
  • He is a real offensive threat as well as a good defender who compliments Morrison well.
  • top man and would be sorely missed if injured
  • got the experience this back four needed to kick on from last season.

    lets hope he stays fit.
  • It must have been strange for Taylor last season, knowing that he was first choice, but that if Cort got a chance in the first team, he would take that place permanently...

From memory Taylor had a bit of a wobble and Cort had effectively taken his place by the end of the season anyway. There seems to be a much longer bedding in period for players these days - and not just with us. Clearly marquee signings tend to go straight into the first team, but it is more common for a player to be at a club for a while before they get straight into the first team.

I agree with AFKA, Cort was a model pro last season, and he is invaluable this.

  • Usually have a couple of quid on him and morro first goal considering there threat in the oppo box.

    Just didn't this weekend

  • I dont think Taylor would have been thinking like that anymore than any other player. You always run th erisk of being replaced by somebody who takes his cahnce when it comes.

Leon is a unit , a wardrobe....whatever you want to call him he's a beast!

He must have suspected it would happen, Taylor is a lower league/ non league player, who's never played higher than L1, whereas Cort is an experienced Championship player with several clubs, with brief PL experience. Getting him on a free was great business considering Palace, Stoke and Burnley all paid more than a £1m for him.
  • Up until we had our little wobble, Taylor had been superb last season... when he eventually got dropped I thought it could easily have been him or Morrison.

But Cort has been fantastic since he came in. Never misses a trick in the air and seems to read the game fairly well too.
  • As I've always said, defence is the one area in our team that I never have cause to worry about if every player is fit.

Agree with this.Rob Hulse has a similar profile ,lets hope he has the same impact as Leon.

  • Saw Cort for the first time vs Yeovil in the 3-0 win and could not believe he was on a freebie.

Reminded me a lot of Rufus both physically and his style of play, no nonsense in his play, strong in the air and decisive in the tackle and presenting a real barrier to the opposition.

Must be our best free transfer for a long, long time.
  • Apart from Kerm :-)
  • Oiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Ormston there will NEVER be another Rufus !!
  • He was the reason we kicked on after the blip at home including notts county where i think he was bought on as a sub at half time

he was immense in the last ten games and has been consistant and immpresive this

    Bloody love that photo.

  • Been great this season, does what he needs to do and does that well.
Surprised he's not been made captain during this injury spell for everyone but that doesn't look like its made a difference to out team
Can still remember his mistake which led to Todorov goal at selhurst 5 years back :)
  • Well said, AFKA

Had been thinking back to how patient he must have been last season

    Good attitude
    Good pro
  • Agree with OP. Cort has been fantastic for us.
The only downside is at the games I keep calling him Carl....
  • Leon is a monster, Leon is a monster la la la la, la la la la

Totally agree re Taylor, great partnership with Morro who as you say could have been the one to be dropped. If Taylor never plays another game for us he can look back with satisfaction at the job he did for us, he was a very important player for the majority of the season.
  • Have to admite I was wrong about him. Firs time I saw him I think I likened him to a pub player. Since then I've loved seeing him win every ball in the air.

I now just have to overcome calling him Carl.
  • Reminds me a lot of Sam Sodje with his great aerial presence in defense and attack. Definitely a real coup by Powell getting him whilst we were in League One.
  • He probably covers more field then most cb's in the league. He goes up for every corner and longthrow, then sprints back to his position afterwards... for such a physical and strong player, his fitness levels are top notch
  • I think he should probably get more goals for us, but that could be happening now with 2 already this season. Watford handled him pretty well, but most defences don't seem to be able to.
