After 10 games

edited October 2012 in General Charlton
Many people consider this a key time to get a pointer as to how the season will unfold.

15th. Goal difference 0. Ahead of Millwall, behind Palace, which matters to some people.

Our esteemed manager has made a couple of strange decisions tactically, but brought in a couple of gems.
Clearly he is gaining experience and importantly, seems to be learning from each set-back.

Crucially, (and to many, unsurprisingly) we have maintained a superb team spirit.

We can beat the better teams, we can lose to the worst of teams - such is this league this year.

Would I take the situation we are in now for the end of this season?
Yes indeed.

  • I know all teams can say that they should have had more points due to bad refs, dodgy linesmen etc etc, but I don't think anyone would begrudge us with a few more points at this stage.

I was at Brum and really should have 2 extra points and deserve better aganst Watford......(I think the Leicester & Hull games cancel themselves out - Palace are now 4th, we deserved nothing against Forest and if you go 3-0 down away from home like we did v Derby then you don't usually get much out of the game neither)

I woulkd say 16/17 points at this stage would be more like it.
  • I predicted 14th place finish at the beginning of the season, so I'm happy. Shame that we could've had an extra couple of points. It's still tight though...we jumped up 5 places today.
  • We will finish higher than 15th. We are learning and should have had a few points by now. It will get better.
  • A few more points.....
  • 3 points off where i would like us to be
  • We're not bottom 3 so if that's the situation at the end of the season then I'll be happy!
  • if you make a habit of not getting points you "deserve" then you don't deserve them because you lack a cutting edge, after Tuesday I was beginning to worry that perhaps we could end up with a season a bit like the first PL one - somewhat eased now.
  • I would bite your hand of for a 15th place finish.
  • Where we are now is probably a good indicator for our finishing spot..................not sure about palice though!
  • Its a far better team and manager than the one that went down and though the division in stronger I dont see any reason why we cant finish mid table.

Its a shame we didnt push the boat out and add more quality in a couple of areas but half the league can say the same thing.

Can see us winning more points away from home though.

I am a member of a couple of Charlton sites and someone recently told me if we finished in the top 10
he would drop his pants and moon everyone. Scary!

Not a lot to add to that

Does 'Mary' hold the record for shortest membership of CL??
    What happened there?
  • Would love to take 15th
But don't wanna be going in to the last game of the season unsure whether we'd stay up !
  • I think that all we have learnt is that this is a very close division with no especially weak teams and no outstanding teams. If we had lost at Blackpool, we would have been discussing the odds of avoiding the drop. If we had beaten Birmingham in that first game, we would be in the top half now and two points outside the play offs.

The old maxim that ten games will give a good indication might work in the Premiership but may be fooling many in the Championship. With everyone beating each other, any club that puts together an undefeated streak of 10 games or, conversely, a winless streak of 10 games will go up/down the table quite quickly. The goal differences tell a story - few teams are scoring many more/less than they are conceding - compare that to the Premiership after a mere 7 games.
  • I think/hope the players and management are on a learning curve - assuming they continue to improve, I hope we'll finish a bit higher than 15th. Maybe 12th?

As long as we don't get dragged into the relegation zone I'll be happy.
  • I must be crazy, but I genuinely think we will be challenging for a play off place come the end of the season. My logic is that we have such a great close knit group of players and such brilliant team spirit, I can't see us getting sucked into lengthy winless streaks without finding the mental strength to turn it around (like Saturday) and I also have a sneaking feeling that once we get on a good run we'll have the togetherness and confidence to see it run and run...

I reckon 7th and we're gutted on the last day of the season when we just miss out.

Maybe I'm a blind optimist but with Powell at the helm and the spirit in the camp I still think this team are going to continue to surprise us as the season goes on.

  • I'm with you Leaburn, I think we'll just miss out on playoffs. Still slightly worried about centre mid.

  • A real topsy turvy feel to the division and as alluded to above the bottom can beat the top so a satisfactory first 10 games. I feel maye we're 1 or 2 points shy of where we'd want to be. Just a shame the Palace game so early in the season. Can't help but think the game at Selhurst, once they've sold Zaha and Powell will be a bit more tactically astute, will be different story. Onwards and upwards starting with 3 points against Barnsley.
  • I think we will always pick up our fair share of points away from the Valley, but the key to the season will be how we deal with the teams that try to stop us, who will have a bit more about them than League One teams that tried to stop us. Leicester were a team that were more open and played the penalty. I think a fit Haynes may help us at home - playing alonside Fuller - but if we crack our home form issue, we could yet challenge for a play off spot. I'm pretty sure we have too much to be near the bottom for too long.

  • I reckon 7th and we're gutted on the last day of the season when we just miss out.

And we'll all be thinking, if only we'd beaten Watford.

    ;o)

    How did you know?
  • Because they said it would have to be at a home game because they don't go away where they're not welcome.
