Set pieces

Last year we scored plenty from them, and barely conceded from them. So far this season it seems to be the opposite. Can we get this sorted and start to climb the table? Why such a difference between the two divisions - are other teams that much better tactically?

Other teams seem physically bigger from what I've seen and our delivery (Kerkar in particular) has not been great either.

A perceptive post. I listened to the commentary on the Hull game provided by BBC Humberside. The commentator, who sees Charlton once or twice every two seasons, thought the delivery from set pieces, especially from Stephens was the best part of our game and the only way we looked like scoring. The games I have seen this season, Jackson and Stephens have put in some dangerous balls. Obviously the ultimate test of the quality of the set piece is how difficult defenders find them to deal with and how many goals we score from them.

Also, our defence, by far the strongest component of the team, is starting to concede goals from set pieces. Yet something else for Chris Powell to think on
  • we have 2 'set pieces' posts .. get together chaps
  • we have 2 'set pieces' posts .. get together chaps

Sounds like that's two more than the team! ;-)
  • I don't think it is just down to set pieces, more just that we are up against stronger teams than we were last year who can defend.

Don't forget that we've had Yann out for the past three games as well. We may have grabbed one or two from him alone considering the amount of crosses we were putting into the box against Watford.
  • Clubs at this level have better scouting, are better prepared and better organised at Set Plays. They are more aware of attempts at blocking-off markers to create free headers, the marking is tighter and they have better defenders in general.

    Lol

  • I think we have gone down a notch in defending them and delivery requires JJ, Green or Stephens - not Kerkar.

  • I think there is also a different mentality in defending depending on the score.

Last season we were often defending a lead (and on a wider scale defending a place at the top of the league), and therefore there is more of a 'survival' element to the way defenses are set up.
  • I can see that. I also think that a few things have gone against us and confidence has dropped a notch or two. Sure we can get it back.
  • Effing ell....just head the f**ker in. Didn't think of that - it's amazing what you pick up on here.
  • Leon from a corner today...good timing.
