I agree, the whole point of having an academy, when you are a club in our current situation, is to produce players you will ultimately sell at a profit. That's why I've always found the current marketing of Valley Gold slightly incongruous, as the academy shouldn't need subsidising. The important thing is to be financially secure so you can hold out for decent transfer fees.
Jonjo did the right thing by us and he will always deserve a warm reagard from fans. He could have not signed a contract and went off with minimal compensation but he clearly knows what is right. If we don't get any further money for Jenkinson - it was still the best bit of buisness we have done for many a year - simply because it funded th etransformation that the team required - you can't put a price on that.
Finally established himself as an important member of the Liverpool first team and has kicked on there. Very proud to say he was one of us. Shame we didn't get to keep him for longer Hope to see him be a regular in that team for a long time
Blimey, good job Jonjo. Always knew he had the potential to go all the way but would never have thought he would be breaking into the England squad this quickly. Really fantastic news.
These two sales made me cancel my valley gold after many years. What's the point? Was gutted to see them go, especially Jonjo.
Unbelieveable.</
Why? How much did we get? What are they worth now.? What will they both be worth next year? We were mugged. I do not care what we done with the money or how hard up we were. Fact is we were mugged. Your smartarse reply will be the usual crap, but the fact is we got mugged. ".............
We sold Jonjo when he was a 17-18 year old playing in League One and we were desparate for money. Why anyone thinks we had the leverage to ask for much more than we did is beyond me.
Normal kid from Harold Hill. Used to go to matches with his dad who was manager of one the local teams in my areas league.
Not bad for a small clubs academy. Defoe getting his 17th international goal this year, Parker even been made national captain. And now it looks like Jenkinson and Shelvey are going to get a chance in the near future too. Can't think of the last Palace academy player to contribute anything to the national side, although admittedly Zaha looks like he'll be a very good player.

If it wasn't for the sale of those 2, it's likely that we would have gone into administration. Personally, I think Valley Gold has contributed to saving the club & it's a shame that anyone cancels, as we will always sell players. No player will stay at Charlton forever. However, I respect your contrary view & right to cancel.

I don't think Oxlade-Chamberlain did much more & The Saints picked up something like £10m + from Arsenal and something simialar for Walcott a few years back.
we sold 2 very promising youngsters that within 2 years are 1st team Prem regulars and now being called up for International matches and we got less than 3m combined !!!
The Shelvey deal stank, as we were desperate. Indeed the worst bit of it, was that we sold him before the end of the season, so he couldn't play in our final league fixtures and the playoffs.
Shelvey in the England team is a good advert for our academy, join Charlton, you'll get a good grounding and get a move to one of the big boys...
I know beggars can't be choosers , but it would be nice to sell our kids for some serious dosh , maybe we're a pushover when someone opens their chequebook?

And Oxlade-Chamberlain has been playing for England a lot longer than Shelvey and is a couple of years younger. A very special talent, probably more so than Jonjo.
Not too many complained about the Jonjo deal at the time, despite him being a popular player with loads of potential. We were desperate for cash and Jonjo hadn't even been playing for the first team.
As for Jenkinson, there was almost unanimous agreement that Arsenal had probably paid over the top for a player with only a handful of league one games behind him.
We are still getting payments for Jonjo, and may get more. Nobody knew if it was going to work out or not, that's why these additional payments are built in. Last season, let's be honest, Jonjo hardly set the world on fire. This season he has been much better but if England were not struggling for players he would still be quite a way from a call-up.
But let's hope he gets a few minutes against San Marino so Charlton can get a bit more cash.
Yes, it is looking like the payments we get from Liverpool will turn out to be the max - does anybody know what the England cap payment is- that can often be quite substantial although it is easier to play for England now than it used to be.
Mick Collins on twitter saying that Liverpool are saying we've already cashed the clause in.
Minimising the earnings as usual
The only reason he didn't play was cos our manager wasn't the most innovative of managers and Liverpool were happy for Jonjo to play at the end of that season but Charlton didn't wanna risk it (the insurance premiums must have been too high) evn though the prize was Championship footy..... Dalglish could not believe how cheap they got him FACT
I agree the Jenkinson deal was more than decent cos he had definitely not shown, to me at least , what potential he is now fulfilling but I guess arsenal are a bit more clued up than me !

Unfortunately we will always be a selling club, which is essential to a point to keep us ticking over.

All part of his education and has now represented England at every level I believe
