Offside

edited September 2012 in General Charlton
The rule was introduced to prevent goal hanging.
However the rule is stupid as it's nearly impossible to officiate on, as you can't see both the moment the ball is passed forward and the position of the attackers and defenders.
Unless video replay is introduced, the rule will always be a judgement call with lots of room for mistakes to happen.

Does anyone know whether alternative ideas have been put forward to prevent goal hanging and to replace this rule.
It certainly continues to be the worst and most complex rule out there.

  • There are no rules in football.

Not sure that it's the worst rule. I think the "pass-back to the goalie" rule is worse. There's nothing uglier in "the beautiful game" than the goalie hurrying (always) a kick that he wasn't prepared for. Before the rule change goalies used to distribute the ball well, or at least have options, now half the time it gets sliced out of play, or never goes where intended. Now that goalies get booked all the time for wasting time, we could improve the game by going back to the old rules.

Introduced to speed the game up and increase the number of goals so teams can't knock it back and forth to keeper constantly. Imagine Arsenal.

If I remember correctly, Liverpool was the biggest offender at the time, no doubt something had to be done. I just think it's a really ugly part of our game the way it is now.

    What about directives?
    ;-)
  • When they introduded the rule that goal kicks could be taken from either side it was to speed up the game. Its now used to slow the game down especially if you're leading.

Think it should be changed back.
  • Get rid of the off-side rule - there's no off-side in Hockey (see, I learnt something from the Olympics). Could even encourage Linaker back into the game. ;-)

Agree with this, the kick should be taken from the side the ball went out of play. Cannot see how allowing the goalkeeper a choice speeds up the game.
  • When is any ref going to implement the 6 second rule for keepers, I don't remember any keeper being punished.

Also foul throws, why cant pro footballers take throw ins properly?
Say what you like about the ref on friday but he did pull up the Palace players a couple of times but then gave up!

  • Only our own Andy Petterson as I recall, Greenie...
  • Back pass rule is good because teams abused the pass back option.

Teams have over the years abused the offside rule - Can you remember the QPR side in the 80s - they were obsence? the simple change that is required is by stiplulating that a player is only offside if he is trying to obtain an advantage by being in an offside position.Basically this would mean that when it is very close, or clear a defence is tactically trying to play a player offside - it isn't offisde.

Alternatively, and what I would favour is the introduction of technolgy. Good runs should never be punished because they are too goo dfor the officials.
  • I was at that game Muttley, the QPR defence were like Usain Bolt out the blocks catching us offside.
  • If that style would have caught on - nobody would watch football anymore. But it is a problem - too many mistakes are being made and a solution is so simple!
