Plan B

edited September 2012 in General Charlton
Do we have one? Not sure we do. We started off trying to use Pritchard & Jackson as wide men, we soon realised not one of them can beat a man with either skill or pace (great attributes for wide players) so we decided to go long ball? One of the worst performances I've seen from Charlton tonight. Was saying last year that Jackson is nowhere near good enough and he WILL get found out...Laurie Wilson, not sure if he's actually serious or not? Gives the ball away for fun, we crowd the box 94th minute, all he's got to do is whip in a lovely ball straight onto the head of..... oh no, the balls in the north upper. Bright spark

  • How come you haven't mentioned Stephens blasting the ball over when the Palace central defenders were split wide apart and BWP was perfectly positioned to run through on goal. This would have been our best chance in the match. He had the time and must have seen what was in front of him.
As the supposed creative central mid-field player he created nothing much in the whole game.

I also thought plan-b was working when Fuller and Green came on. We certainly bossed the last 15 minutes.

Also remember that we had a valid goal disallowed, Palace didn't create much beyond loads of corners and our defending for their goal was very poor although he took it well.
  • Wilson was the best Charlton player. Him and Solly.

This. Through the veneer of crap posters on CL at last a voice of realism.
  • are you actually serious? wilson was awful, would you settle for that every game? we will struggle this year fact.
  • Thought Wilson was shocking! He kept playing half hearted passes which could have ended in injury to our other players!
  • Surprissed after there goal, Powell did not bring on Fuller, as they had two players on Kerm all night.
Yes we looked more effective when Green/Fuller came on. Of course we picked it up in the last 15 minutes, but a bit lack lustre for me in front of goal. Slightly surprissed that the team did not react more.......
  • I was worried this forum was turning into a place to discuss shit music for a second then....

Wilson is a quality player, but he looked completely out of his depth last night. Don't judge a player on one game is all I would say

He was terrible in defence but looked better on attack, although his shot on goal made me want to hit him.
  • I don't think there is a decent Plan A at present. Powell is incredibly hamstrung by the lack of funds. He has to get by with players who although successful last year, are struggling this time around. What's needed is an over our dead bodies attitude. Bring in all the tough guys (if we have many) and play a defensive game while relying on Fuller especially, Wright-Phillips and Kermorgant to grab the goals to get the points. The amount of space allowed to the Palace scorer last night is just not acceptable whilst defending a corner.
  • Plan B is bring Fuller on and hope he creates a goal out of nothing.

    yep completely

  • Time to bring in kerkar and maybe green. Dropping pritch and jj. Nothing against them 2 but we need a change in midfield.
  • I would play Hamer, Solly, Morrison, Cort, Evina, Green, Hollands, Stephens, Jackson, BWP, Fuller next time around, with Kermorgant, Haynes, Cook, Pritchard, Wilson, Dervite and Button on the bench. With wiggins out we will need JJ to sit back and help Ceddy out, which he will do better than Kerkar or Cook
  • Last night bringing on Fuller wasn't the answer. We couldn't supply the ball to our forwards, so adding another wouldn't help. If Plan B is having Fuller on the pitch or starting means long ball - then we're doomed - I think long ball got us relegated many times. While on here I will add that Wilson was poor last night, but he hasn't played many games for us but he wears the Charlton shirt so I will support him. Perhaps, as has been suggested elsewhere he can play a midfield role - I don't think he is a right back. Thanks for listening.
  • Do we have one? Not sure we do. We started off trying to use Pritchard & Jackson as wide men.

Jackson & Pritchard weren't playing as wide men. They were left and right of the midfield diamond, tucking inside.

  • Wilson was poor but settled into the game gradually, he'll get better with more appearances. Being thrown into a London derby after an injury is not the best way to give a settled start to a new signing!

Although I was fuming when he decided to shoot from all of 45 yards with practically the last chance of the game...

Actually, I was hoping that was exactly what this thread was about. It seems everytime we have a bad result/run someone has to trot out the "We've got no Plan B" line, as if they are some tactical genius and every manager we've had is an incompetent moron who hasn't even given a moments thought to what to do if things go wrong.

    *shakes head.

Do you think he will be a credible Carter Offy?
  • Ha ha - nice one Len.
I'd heard he was in that role - look forward to seeing it. To be honest, I don't think Dennis Waterman was all that as Carter to start with (heresy, I know). I much preferred Michael Caine's portrayal. The less said about Sly Stallone's version the better!
    ;o)

not sure if people are soley judging Wilson by the diabolical waste of a shot at the end as that was inexcusable, however, for the rest of the match when he had hold of the ball it looked like something positive could happen at least. you're right, we will struggle no doubt but one step at a time. Looks like we have little or zero money and the same team that was in the 3rd division last season. At least it is better than playing Bury!

  • Plan B is sending the keeper up at corners.

Its not a case of people jumping 'on it' because of 1 sensitive defeat - its just that people are getting twitchy now becasue they have been watching shit performances for the best part of 9 calendar months, however, we are now getting worked over by better opposition whereas last season our defence would pull us through.
My own view is that maybe we need a change of tactics, (certainly need to get away from hoofball) , but do we have the technical nous to be able to make that change? , because, i tell you what, if we continue to play in the mode we played on Friday, then not only are we going to have a relegation fight, but we are going to have some mighty disenchanted fans too.
  • "shit performances for the best part of 9 calendar months"??????????????
  • Not sure about "shit" performances, but we had a few unconvincing games last season, and if we are honest, almost as many as good ones, but we could get away with it in league 1 and we can't in the championship..
  • Charlton fans in disenchantment shocker! I don't know about anyone else but the last nine calendar months seemed okay to me-we won the league with over 100 points and I went on holiday.

There were a lot of poor performances from January onwards ( one that springs to mind is Sheff U at home where they battered us, but the defence kept them out,Walsall , Colchester,Rochdale.Orient.Notts County,Bury at home were others but there were many, many more), but also that the method hasnt changed much (long hoofball to Kermy)- there just doesnt seem to have been any progress on the tactical/technical front.
  • It seemed to me that our 'Plan B' looked far more promising than the tactics that we chose to start the game with. Once we brought both Fuller and Green on we really began to open Palace up. It was just a shame that they defended so well, and that in truth we were unlucky not to score with a few last ditch chances.

I think that a little more pace and skill down the width of the pitch is really what we need to exploit and get in behind opposition defences, especially as the Championship is packed full of centre halves good enough battle Kermo in the air far more ruthlessly than that of the League 1 opposition. As much as I admire both JJ for his technical ability, and Pritch for his incredible work ethic, the concept of playing what I would call two central players as our wide men really limits our attacking options.

Not worried about relegation based on the Palace performance. It always hurts to lose against rivals, but the spirit shown by the team even in the dying minutes showed that we still have a hunger - something we lacked the last time we tried to tackle the Championship. And despite football being football, we were unlucky to have had a goal disallowed that would have potentially seen a completely different game.
