I remember reading we were once after Stanley Matthews.
Yes. Jimmy Seed was keen on signing him and knew that the Stoke manager would be agreeable. This was in 1938 and he'd have cost around £13,000, almost the record fee at that time. In the end both chairmen turned the idea down, much to Seed's regret.
Might be a myth but didn't Seed make an offer without the chairmans permission?
Possibly one of these stories that was just made up but im sure someone told me Curbs turned down C Ronaldo as he did not want to pay that much for an 18 year old, anybody confirm that?
yer heard that with Ronaldo. 4 million apparantly. year before he went United for 3 times that amount. Only a few years before he left for Madrid for 20 times that amount!
Watching Ricky Lambert this afternoon has made me wonder what if we had actually signed him?
What of we had bought Tim Cahill when we had the chance or Steve Sidwell before the Chel$ki dollar turned his eye?
Who are the other ones that got away from us? The good, the bad and the downright ugly!
Yeah. I was speaking to Peter Varney & recommended we signed Lambert when he was still at Bristol R. Varney said he was just a big lump & we weren't interested :-(
I heard we put in a bid the same time as kezman and chelsea had both but i dont have aby sources. The only person ive ever had as a source said dennis wise had already signed a contract to be manager about 10 mins before powell was announced as manager

Pardew also tried to get Edgar David's when we went down and I couldn't help thinking at the time that he'd have done a great job alongside Song.
In the championship, Ebanks-Blake I was disappointed about.
Now, George Boyd, Michel Antonio and Sam Baldock spring to mind!
Makes you wonder how differently things could have been if he'd played for us and got that affinity he has with Man Utd!

Didn't we recently have the chance to sign Rivaldo (admittedly at 40 years of age and currently plying his trade in Angola)?
