Jan Primus, Duke of Brabant, was one of the most powerful lords in medieval Brabant. He developed a strong appreciation of beer and granted brewers special privileges. He also reformed the currency system and breathed new life into trade. On tbe 5th of June 1288, he won the battle of Woeringen against the Archbishop of Cologne and the counts of Luxembourg and Gerle. This enabled him to unite Limburg and Brabant and keep the trade routes safe.
