A weekend in Brighton

edited August 2012 in Not Sports Related
Going for a birthday weekend late September to try and celebrate being 23.

Haven't been before, is it a good night out? And can anyone recommend a good cheap place to stay for 2/3 nights.

cheers

  • You use to get cheap weekend deals in the place in Brighton Mariner, about a 20 minute walk from the Peir, towards Newhaven
  • 23 ?? Lucky git !

Try the Queensbury B&B, basic and cheap, but clean
  • Brighton is a cracking night out, as long as your not homophobic, but plenty of "straight clubs"

You got a cheap deal in the Brighton Mariner did you Rob? That's very brave of you to admit to that on here.

Went there for my brothers stag in Feb. Try the St christophers hostel on the seafront. Staggering distance from all the boozers and clubs and cheap enough.

Was full of hen dos and up for it types so crack on. Make sure you take ID though (ie passport/ driving licence even if your in your 30s/ 40s) as they are gits down there for letting you in in a lot of places and often struggle with groups of lads so wise to grab some girls in the que and split up to get in.

I seem to remember the last time I was in Brighton with you, you were hobbling, are the two facts related?

  • I went down there for a night out in June, it was quality to be fair. Plenty of tidy birds down there, loads of decent pubs for all day drinking and a mint night out (not just for gays). We kipped in this hostel called the Grapevine right by the seafront, did the job. Only problem we found was that a lot of the hostels dont take single night bookings as they want people for the whole weekend but if you're going for 2 nights you'll be fine.

Couple of good clubs in the arches on the seafront, West Street is where all the chain bars and hen / stag dos are, so hang out there if you fancy getting in a scrap!
  • You have to ignorant to concern yourself with the gay element of Brighton. It's not really any different from any other city and is a tired cliche.

Had plenty of quality nights out there, but it's essential you figure out some bars before you go. Alley Cats and Varsity (if they're still open) near the pier. Phunky Phish is a funny enough club just up the road.

On the seafront you have Coalition and Man of War. Recently we decided it was a lot simpler to bring your own beers if it's sunny, cos you end up on the beach anyway if you hit the seafront bars.

If you are after a more...lively night, West St is the place to go. A rather horrible club called Revolution is popular with non-locals!

As above, bring ID and so on. And it's worth noting a local address/ postcode. Sometimes they won't let you in if they suspect you're not a local.

  • Try not to end up on West Street, the clubs on the beach are generally much better.
  • Had the displeasure of trying to leave Brighton on Sunday evening. One road in and one road out. Took an hour and a half to travel about half a mile along the sea front and past the pier sitting in traffic. Horrible experience. My fault for going on a sunny day I suppose!
  • Used to live there, brilliant night out, as said above try and avoid west street unless you are a fan of oceana clubs etc.

If you don't care where you stay then book one of the hidden hotels you can get on lastminute or Hotwire, generally they tell you where abuts they are located and what the rooms are like, but not the hotel room until you book. Did this for London to Brighton ride this year and got a cheap double for £50
  • Thanks decent info. Would anyone say it's better or worse than Bournemouth for a weekend stay?
  • Holy shit Bournemouth hahaha that was the chaviest stag do I ever saw. No comparison for me. Although Brighton really does need a deep clean. It's getting a little grubby!

  • Depends what you are after, I prefer Brighton if only for the choice of places to go, Bournemouth I found to be just like any city centre weekend evening just by the seaside. That might be your thing but not really my cup of tea.
  • Make sure you visit, Grace of Brighton
  • Never been to Brighton but me and my missus have talked about going for the weekend and to be honest we both agree we'd prefer to go to a gay club. Simply because I'd get pissed off with knobheads who can't seem to compute that my dropdead gorgeous lady is actually with me when they try to chat her up in a straight club.

Would have to be a gay lady club though. Did I mention Mrs AUN is also a fan of the minge?

  • Lived down there for a couple of years....we like the seaside (05-07), loads of pubs down there, North and South Laines, or look around the area south of the high st, where you may come across pubs such as Robin Hood or the Lion and Lobster....also I agree with others...Western Road is very lively (that's an understatement) and there are plenty of clubs under the arches along the seafront between the two piers...one of which is just a shell after being burnt out. Whatever you do or wherever you decide to go you should have a fun weekend...Brighton really does 'rock'.

Try the Charles Street bar, opposite the pier, near Funky Fish, me & the missus had some good nights in there with no hassle for being straight (which has happened in other bars down there) and for a good Friday night cheesy karaoke (some in drag) the Queens Arms on George Street.

Been the a few times for various friends birthdays etc, all I can add is never go upto a club in more than two's and if they ask where your from never say London you will be turned away

Agree....BUT whatever you do don't say your from Crawley either, there was a time when saying so would gaurentee you were not allowed in.
  • cheers for the info on this, think me and the lads will do Brighton it sounds like a must.
  • regular down brighton, basically right at the pier is straight, left is the gay bit, agree about the lots of lads and also not being too pissed before you enter the clubs, also shoes is a must
