Today's game from a Birmingham point of view.

Firstly, thanks for having me on the forum...I hope some of the information I provided for visiting fans proved useful today.

In terms of the match, you deserved to be leading at half time, and deserved to win after 90...with Carr out, and Spector unfit, we had an 18 year old centre back making his debut at right back, and you tore him to shreds...the amount of great crosses you put in that were spurned by the forwards got silly by the end...we are a team with 6 of the 11 making debuts, and a new manager and backroom staff, so it was always going to be tough against a team with a winning mentality and continuity and so it proved.

So many teams came to us last year and parked the bus, so it was nice to see a team leave 2 up top and come to attack. I commented to a mate that even when you went 1-0 up you still bought the game to us....I thought our substitutes improved our game....Nathan Redmond is quick and tricky, and big Ziggy is a nightmare for tired defences dropping deeper and deeper, and to give him his dues it was a lovely finish with what was virtually the last kick of the game.

Thought the visiting support was good whilst the home support was its usual poor self...we used to have a fearsome home crowd, but the dire football inflicted upon it by Alex Mcleish over 3 years seems to have done terminal damage

I mentioned in the other thread, that the area next to Charlton fans behind the goal has been given up to a group calling themselves "Forza blues" who promised to bring the atmosphere back...I counted 8 of them, and didn't hear them once.

Hope those who travelled had a good day out, and best of luck for the rest of the season

  • Nice post Bazza and best of luck to you for 44/45 more games this season
  • Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated and good luck to you lot too. I hear it was a reasonably close game with us edging it. But we thought a point was a decent result so we're reasonably happy. Thought your lot would make the atmosphere a bit better though, glad our fans were alright
  • I learn a lot from what other teams' fans say about our team and our club, so it's great to read such gracious and generous comments. Thanks a lot for taking the time Fatbarry, and I hope the atmosphere improves (now we've been there:-)). A loud and intimidating St Andrews is part of the soul of English football, especially when you are not on the receiving end of it.
  • Cheers Barry. You're not the Fat Barry are you?

  • Certainly was the quietest home crowd at st Andrews I have ever heard

Thanks for the opinion, well appreciated. Based on the game today, how do you think we'll do over the season?
  • Fat Barry , how do you think we compare to sides you faced at home last season?
  • Most teams sat back and played for a draw, even the likes of Cardiff and Southampton were happy to leave with a point...I think teams with an attacking intent, who take it to other teams will do well in the division. As I mentioned earlier, it was a good time for you to play us given the mass changes in the summer and 6 of the starting 11 being debutants, but I think you will be fine. One word of caution...you missed a LOT of chances, and whilst you played nicely into wide positions, I didn't think your strikers showed a cutting edge. I'm not sure if you have strength in depth, but to do well in this division you need someone who can regularly put the ball in the net
  • Cheers Fat Barry, your spot on about our finishing today, to get anywhere in this division you have to be clinical.

  • Many thanks for posting again, post match, FB. Thought your supporters were pussy cats from what we could see & hear.

Don't know whether it's a regular thing but we were greeted by a lovely black steward as we entered our section who shook hands with the male fans and kissed the ladies on both cheeks - such a gentleman ! Certainly the best welcome I've ever had at an away ground!
  • By the way Fat Barry , i was treated to two sides of Birmingham fans today ( i'm sure every club has 2 sides of fans)

    1) An elderly Brummie fan , who upon seeing we didn't have a foggiest where we were going escorted us to the ground, what a star.

    2) On the way out some , nob head jumping up and down on the other side of the fence near out team coach , totally unprovoked shouting obscenities and telling us he we were going to 'get it'
  • On the way home from the match got stuck on the M6 due to an accident, got talking to a Brum supporter as we waited.
He said we should have been 4 up by half time, seemed as if we had 5 in mid field and overran them, enjoyed the way we played but we need to finish better, never thought that they would equalise.
  • Good day out all in all but have to say at £32 walk up, for football at this level, is it any wonder there is an atmosphere problem. Would be interested to know if it is the same price for home fans. Very tame crowd in home end today. Fatbarry said in another thread that there is more effective policing of the section to our right these days, after recent problems, but surely matchday pricing has also kept a lot of fans away, and must have simply priced many out.
Agree strongly with PragueAddick. St Andrews in full voice almost deafening. The loudest in my memory of Charlton aways- very intimidating and impressive. Can't say that anymore if things carry on as they are there and it's a shame in my opinion.
And by the way after we scored today, that is among the loudest (per capita basis) i think i have heard a charlton away following.

I really hope we bring in a tidy striker even if on loan. BWP or Kermit gets injured long term, we're donald ducked.

    Just saying.

Nice posts FatBaz, cheers fella ;)
  • Well done FatBarry good post . Nice to hear an oppositions fans point of view.
  • You have days when they don't fall for you or go in. I think our strikers are good enough. A good point made about our excellent crossing and delivery - was a feature of last season that has carried over.
  • listening to the game and reading the match report, it seems a lot of our good chances fell to JJ, so I'm not overly concerned by the forwards right now. I am sure we will get at least 1 more in by the end of the window anyway.

    Thanks for the view, fatbarry
  • And nobody can accuse JJ of being a poor finisher for a midfielder.
