U21 premier league

edited August 2012 in General Charlton
Palace are in it. What do we have to do to be a part of it as well?

I think the league is brilliant idea, should really help bring young talent through the ranks.

  • I thought we were going to be in it. Wasn't Paul Hart's appointment in part to get us ready for it?

don't know judging the new category rule each club must play play at least 2 of it's fixtures at the home ground and it would seem a lot of clubs are opting for evening games then I am assuming they are thinking about getting the supporters in - low price game to encourage the family etc etc
  • looking at those opponents i'd like to think we will do very well in that league. We already know our yoof teams are excellent so with a bith of luck they can have a season of bossing teams about and then step up and take a tier 1 league by storm

The yoof can more than hold their own against the Prem teams as demonstrated last season, unfortunately the new stus created for the academies is fund driven to enable adequate no of coaches etc etc and from what I understand and have read about it, they will only be able to achieve playing against the premier teams if the club can or intends to fund academy to category 1 status minimum £2.5m funding !
The concept of the new academies is fundamentally very good as it delivers much needed football, additional coaching and better facilities, however, driven by the Premier league it once again stretches the void between premier clubs and fa leagues even further and of course benefits the premier league...how unusual !! The investment is a large financial step for any club in current climate and there are several Premiership sides lower down who haven't been able to make the financial commitment and have therefore got Category 2 status Swansea, Newcastle

Swansea and Newcastle are geographically disadvantaged, which may have had some bearing on their not applying to join Category 1 .......?

  • It appears that as the auditing of all the Academies will not finish until October so all those clubs applying to be cat 1 will play in the Cat 1 league (even if they have already had their audit or not).

This explains why Palace are in the top league and were not as we didn't apply for Cat 1. The plan was for CAFC to go next for Cat 1 next year.

Then from the 2013/2014 season clubs will play in their relevant category
  • not a great idea wont be the competitive edge that is gained in the prem and lower leagues, a better idea would be what they have in spain where teams have b teams that play in the lower leagues and cant be promoted
  • should be a big league mirroring the premier league with almost exactly the same fixtures but played on a sunday. Would give some of the players the impetus to avenge their first team side if they lost

    QPR not geographically disadvantaged
