Injury updates on Mambo, Hughes, Harriot and Pope (but not Haynes)

  • Versatile midfielder Andy Hughes has started his recuperation after Achilles surgery last week.

The 34-year-old had arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right Achilles and is currently recovering at his family home.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope continues to make good progress after his recent knee surgery, while Yado Mambo is also on the road to recovery and Callum Harriott is back in training following a calf complaint.

Hughes is yet to feature this summer after a persistent problem and physio Erol Umut explained: “He had to have an arthroscopic procedure, which basically means they explore the tendon and have another clean out and repair any areas that they need to.

“The operation went very well and he’s gone back home now because he needs to be non-weight bearing for a couple of weeks, so he can’t put any weight on his legs.

“He’s got a bit of an upper body programme to get on with, and then he will be back to see the consultant next week. Hopefully he will slowly start to progress after that.”

Talented keeper Pope suffered a meniscal tear to his left knee during training in Lepe in July and the injury ruled him out of Charlton’s summer friendly against his former club, Bury Town.

He has been wearing a knee brace as he continues his rehabilitation, although that rigidity has been relaxed of late.

Erol added: “The operation went very well. But with these kind of injuries, you have to be very careful for the first three to four weeks.

“The brace is there more for protection rather than necessity. Around the training ground, the brace comes off so he can do his exercises.

“He’s now started running on our Alter G machine – our anti-gravity treadmill – where he doesn’t have to put his weight through his joints while he is maintaining his fitness levels.

“He is coming along very well and we hope to push him on further in the next couple of weeks.”

Umut also reported that winger Harriott has returned to training with the U21 squad following his calf injury, and that defender Mambo is also making steady progress after sustaining a knee problem in Spain.

The physio noted: “Yado is still at the early stages of his knee injury. He had an MRI scan which we were happy with. It did show quite a bit of trauma to his left knee, but there was no long-term damage.

“In these cases, we just have to tread carefully and give him the rest time he needs for the knee to settle down.
  • Oh god Clarke is injured. How are we supposed to get rid of someone shit and injured?!
  • I would guess Haynes is fine then - must have been rested as a precaution and will prob start tonight.

I've read that three times - where does it mention Clarke?
  • There is a very inconspicuous page 2
  • “He’s a couple of weeks away from possibly joining in training if he continues to progress as he is.”

Striker Leon Clarke is also on the treatment table, with Erol adding: “Leon took a minor knock to his left ankle in training. He should be back in training in a few days.”

I don't think it's cut and pasted up there but its on the OS article right at the bottom:

  • ok thanks.
  • Bover on twitter

"@ruben_bover: Physio session done.. Sad to be missing the first game of the season lets see what this season brings #cafc"

Sounds like he's expecting to be involved this season when he's fit. Didn't get a mention from Erol though.
