This week the new season commences with our League Cup game against Orient, and with this match so the season of Players Marks and the resulting Statbank also gets underway. To remind you all of this wonderful service here are the main points:
After every first team game I put up a list of players who participated in the game. If you attended the game or on the rare occasion watched a live game on "the media" then you are entitled to mark each player on their performance. Marks must be between 0 and 10 and can only be given for a player who has completed at least 30 minutes of the game, if a player hasn't completed 30 minutes then I put "n/a" by their name. As a general rule for a Saturday game I keep the thread open until Tuesday morning and for a Tuesday game until Thursday afternoon. Some Lifers not only give marks but comment on the players performance which is very helpful for those who didn't attend the match but is in no way obligatory.
Once I close the thread I tot up all the marks and from there get the Man of the Match, who is the player with the highest average for the game. I then publish this together with other Charlton stats which I get from various sources but mainly the Football League. There are occasions when the official sources are wrong and then I use the correct stat, like Waggy scoring at home to Bournemouth last season. The only match stat that I adjudicate on myself is Assists. The official stats often get this wrong so I rely on the video of the match and the CAFC match report. As the season progresses so the variety of the stats increases.
Championship matches make up the majority of the stats and are the basis of all calculations. Cup game are kept as a separate set of stats.
I do make mistakes with the stats and rely on you guys letting me know so that I can correct them, this way together we end up with some information that is of use to most CLers.
I hope you enjoy the season of anorakism and constructive comments are always welcome.
So keep a lookout for PLAYERS MARKS and a few days later THE STATBANK
