Not sure Mooney was that bad (although undoubtedly did manage to miss the odd shocker) and would've been a good squad striker at L1 level, just think he came in at a bad time when the atmosphere was so poisonous. If he'd have played his clever bit part role alongside Kermorgant last season when BWP had his lull in form, I think opinions of him would be a bit higher.
IMO Hasselbaink and McLeod (and arguably Gray) are up there, not only because they were poor, but how much money we wasted on them. Both are alongside Faye and Traore in recent times for me.
I never hated Mooney as much as a lot of people on here. He had his moments that made you question the existence of a God but he worked hard and he got a few useful goals. Considering he was brought in for exactly that reason and we got into the Play Off semis where he scored a crucial (ok, not that crucial in the end) early goal in the second leg, I don't think he can be lumped in with the relegation tat.
Is Frank Nouble the (player) we had on loan from Wet Sham couple of years back ? By far the most embarrasing lump I've ever seen with a Charlton shirt on
I would say Andy Jones was not the worst striker we have ever had but he was so disappointing. If you look at a picture of him when he joined to when he left there was a 'massive' difference. Real shame. Bradley Allen was similarly disappointing.
A selection of 5 in chronological order from close on 50 years of following Charlton:
Gordon Riddick
Barry Endean
Richard Wilson
Andy Gray
Chris Dickson
I should emphasise that these players have been selected on the basis of their performances for Charlton. Riddick, Endean and Gray performed tolerably well elsewhere.
I only want one name on the list: Francis Jeffers, 2.6 million pounds, 20 appearances, 3 goals. Released on a free. I do think the fee spent has to have an impact on who we think are the worst strikers. The only other contender would be Marcus Bent.
The worst almost certainly played in the 20s when we more or less came bottom of Div 3 South. Back then you were fit if you could run back from the chip shop after lunch. Even Izale would have scored 20 a season back then. The standard of the oppo must surely be taken into account.
In recent times taking the oppo into account, either Akpo or Izale
