Matt, I don't consider you rivals as I don't know any Palace fans. Most of my mates are Millwall fans, so I consider them more to be rivals (my own personal choice). I just don't like Palace, from the time we played at Selhurst.
I'm not interested in football voilence, I couldn't give a toss who has the 'hardest fans'. Although I'm sure Palace think they have the upper hand from the time some cowardly fans attacked families on a train including a friend of mine who was headbutted despite being with his 5 year old daughter. I am sure a lot of Palace fans were as disgusted by this as Charlton fans were.
I would imagine Palace fans living in and around Bromley (where a lot of Charlton fans live as well) have more rivalry, because of the people they know and have banter with.
Do I think Palace are odd? not really, although the Palace Ultra's or Holmesdale Fanatics or whatever they are called is very cringeworthy and embarrassing. But each to their own I suppose.
One is a longtime season ticket holder, an intelligent and decent man with a good sense of humour and I took him to our last game of last season and he cheered happily along with everybody else and insists he is genuinely happy that we have been promoted.
The other lives across the road (in Cornwall). He staggers home from the pub at about 8pm when he is too drunk to get served anymore with a carrier-bag full of cans of beer. He can be seen standing around outside the local pubs having a fag, clearly p****ed t any time from 11am, and can be heard giving it large when there isn't anyone larger around.
I hope this is a useful contribution to this interesting and orginal debate.
Bunny. Been quite alot of trouble at many of the Palace v Charlton matches I've been to. Don't see a problem, both sets of supporters think their club is better than the other one, full stop. Never gonna be the best of buddies. Used to live very close to their ground (Selhurst Park), and may i be most definitely not the first to say, what a dilapidated dump it is!
Problem is, Palace pick on easy targets, like they've done with you in the past and with us last season, whereas they never show themselves to people who can fight back.
I find it a bit sad that a club is judged by some on the hardness of its fans- We are the best bahaved fans (with a few exceptions) and should be proud of that. No reason why we shouldn't hate Palace though - I honestly can't understand why anybody would want to support them even though I know some Palace fans who seem decent enough. I suppose I liken their support of Palace to that of George Clooney going out with Russell Brand. Clearly something wrong with the way their brain is wired. How anybody could pick Millwall or Palace over supporting Charlton is beyond comprehension.
Was talking to a bloke in our IT dept the other day. Apparently he supports 2 teams. Charlton AND Palace!
Says he grew up in the selhurst area when we played there and his dad used to take him every Saturday no matter who was playing and has had a soft spot for both teams since.
1) many many years ago when I supported Halifax Town Malcolm Alison complaining about lightbulbs in the dressing room after they had been well beaten 3-1 by a Halifax team playing the best football I ever saw them play 2) how when living in Beckenham they all called out of the woodwork when they were in an FA Cup semi final - truly sickening.
I find all this 'we're harder than you' talk very sad. I guess we will do our talking on the pitch, as usual!
I like this - as Millwall are south London's number one club on the pitch (and have been for 2 seasons)...and I don't think that'll change next season.

Where is Pilchard with one of 'The average Charlton fan has nothing to feel inferior about with regards to Crystal Palace' posts? Or Henry Irving with his 'small club, small mentality' posts? I have missed you guys being in the lower leagues. Looking forward to your self-affirming, self-loathing, weird Palace obsession coming back into our lives.
Are you an ultra?
No. I am a Palace fan, ST holder.
So, are you one of those Charlton fans who think your support is comprised of a combination of Danny Dyer 'tasty geezer' types, as you are 'one notch above us' in the hooligan stakes? Or are you the statistican, analysing attendances to get the percentages of increase you have over us? Or are you the bearded bitter type, who seems to think that by trying to manufacture a false rivalry with us will actually work?
You poor bastard. If your club and fans weren't so loathsome I might have a shed of sympathy for you. It's fair to say most Charlton fans hate you, and w
So what I get from this thread is:
A. You hate us; B. You don't hate us; C. We are hooligans; D. We are not worthy of being hooligans as you are a hoolie 'notch' above us; E. You are more akin to Millwall than us; F. But you are nothing like Millwall; G. We will never understand rivalry; H. Despite the fact you (and only you) view us as your rivals;
And you think we are odd?
Excuse me Mr. Nigel. Let me give you my own list, comprised of FACTS and not selective reading.
A) We will always be bigger than you We are one of only a handful of teams to average over 40,000 spectators a season. C) We have had many more seasons in the top flight than you D) Even in arguably our darkest days (the last three years), we attracted more supporters to our games than your sorry outfit could a division above us. E) We've had more major honours than you. Fairdos it's only one. But our name is at least on the cup. F) You're bizarrely renowned for your academy. Would you care to tell me when the last player from this fabled set-up managed to win an England cap? Oh, Gareth Southgate. I think this is the point which typifies just how delusional you cnuts are.
including a friend of mine who was headbutted despite being with his 5 year old daughter.
That's truly disgusting.
Oh right. Because Millwall have got 'standards'. Do me a favour.
Many many chaps have got standards. Some haven't. The stories of those who haven't & have bullied people will stick longer in the memory than all those other times when nothing has happened because people with standards haven't randomly attacked fathers with their children.
We had 3,000 all over Charlton the other year. How many women & kids were beaten?
There are some whelks who want to pick a fight with anyone, they generally ain't tolerated by those who matter. They tend to show their faces at local away games but won't be seen outside the Riverside, Turf Moor, Elland Road etc.

See thats what it should be all about - banter, not 'we ran/had more 'names'/those that matter' bollox. Nice answer Mr Bunny Spanner, its refreshing that one of your lot can face the computer the right way at last. I dont include SLL in my last sentence (written, not prison) 'cos we all know he is a closet Addick. ;o)
Its tradition not to like the nearest club but a lot of that at the top of th thread is probaly the 18-22years old bracket (probably younger) that think thats the 'team to hate' In actual fact they have more rivalry with Brighton as we do with Southampton. Petty to 'HATE' Palace when they are not much different to us in terms of the heights they have reached. Only thing was they had a 'tosser of a chairman' when ours was alright up until the recruitment of Dowie. LOL
Palace are my least favourite team and everything about them, from their hideous kit, to their delusional sense of their own status and support, to their creepy 'ultras' just makes me think...........yuk.
There must a website or secret society or something somewhere with rules that determines whether you are officially rivals or not and everyone must obey the rules of it. Obviously we are not officially rivals.
Comments
No interest in childish petty 'rivalry' spats. Playground stuff
PrattMatt has pretty much summed up Palace fans for me, with his oddball comments. We're obsessed with them, despite him being on a Charlton board at 7.30? Freak.
