Always look on the bright side of life...

edited July 2012 in General Charlton
Reliable sources have had info of negative situations which are still unconfirmed, could have happened and been avoided, may not be avoided and may not have been an issue at all but...
We are League One Champions, had a fantastic season, singing 'We Are The Champions' and 'we've got our Charlton back' while Sir Chris Powell gave us his biggest smile yet holding the trophy above his head.
Now looking forward to the Championship, bigger teams coming to the Valley, bigger crowds, sold out matches against our rivals and we have that lovely ingredient called momentum.
Our academy is being heavily invested in and that's a great sign for the future.
So many positives that are confirmed to focus on rather than negative speculation that may never be!

  • Well said!
  • La la la la la la :) Don't worry be happy !
  • Yes, any instability is a worry but much more of a worry if we were in League One. You would have thought that given recent success, certain people have too much at stake to let things go belly up. I have never subscribed to the to make loads of transfers and whilst some clearly knowledgable people have taken this position, I have always considered it dangerous.

I think the team we had last season can improve and I'd like to see how much they do. Of course, I'd like to see one or two of the right quality come in, but no more. What I'd hate to see is key players go. I honestly believe we have the ingredients for an excellent season,so playing wise, at themoment I am very relaxed about things.
  • Give that man a cigar!

    *round of applause performed*
  • Best post for a long long time on CL. Well done and thank you drawnablank
  • Well said Sir.

Given the title of this thread, can we ask that only positive-thinking posters respond to comments here?

No. It would never happen. The doom-and -gloom merchants will soon be on here dragging us down.

    Good post, Drawnablank.

Whatever is happening in the Boardroom, it's not anything that any one of us can be involved in.
No amount of gnashing of teeth or blind guesswork on our part counts for much.

And anyway, it'll eventually sort itself out one way or another.

Meanwhile, I agree ...... let's celebrate what we have.
And there are many, many positives.

    Pre-season starts Thursday!

  • we are in a better position than we have been for many years. enjoy it!
  • Yes we are - I look at players like Solly and Wiggins and think these could be premiership players in a year or two. But look who else we brought in - Hamer, Morrison, Stephens, Hollands, Pritchard, Kermogant, Haynes - the potential of these excite me and apart from Solly, we didn't have any of them at the end of last season.

The brief was made clear to us before we bought those in - get players that could a) get us up and b) be competetive in the Championship. Looking at the players, I think the club did a much better job than I anticipated at the time and I can't undertsand people worrying about next season. The biggest disaster could be bringing players in and not giving the quality we have the chance to improve further and shine.

Sure, Muttley ...... agree with much of what you say.

But there are some holes in the team ......as a unit, our midfield isn't up to Championship standard.
Secondly, there isn't enough pace throughout the team, particularly at CB and wide midfield.

And that's before we look at squad cover for players like Jacko, Solly and Yann.

Expect essential signings in the next few weeks.
  • Is our midfield that much worse than the one we had in the championship 4 seasons ago under Pardew?

Ambrose, Holland, Zheng Zhi, Semedo and Reid

    No pace there either

Not saying that we don't need to strengthen the squad - just that there's no need to panic - Lge 1 champs, settled side, good team spirit and the potential to perfrom on the championship stage

    Fair comment

Agree. I would even say the Class of 2012 are better as much more balanced.
  • This total renewing of the squad/team/club worked for Sir Chris. It seems other managers, whether it is forced on to them or not are trying the 'tactic'. The Preston manager springs to mind.
  • Here here
  • I've been checking on here everyday and feeling a bit deflated about lack of signings but I do really trust the manager and thinking about it, its good that they're starting to tie down so many players to long(er) term contracts.
And I love the positivity of the poster too, I remember when we were first relegated from the Premiership and the shock and confusion I felt at then being relegated a 2nd time - this spell in the Championship will be a lot better I'm sure and the signings will come, its not like we need a totally new team - just more options.
  • To add to the positive vibe, Ms Fanackapan's report from the fan's forum last night that we intend to go for Category One status with the Academy is a very positive sign that we still intend to go about things the right way. As such, I have decided that the future is indeed looking bright and have applied for my membership of the rose tinted crowd. Up the Addicks!
  • No signings today?

Cobblers to the bright side :(

    brackets ;) close brackets
  • Can someone just explain in a couple sentences what's going on without using code, like the mafia?

Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes
  • The only thing we have to fear is fear itself....

...plus all this weird shit in the boardroom and administration.

No, but that wasn't great either. Reid only top Champ player there. Others decent Champ players at best. We are aiming to do more than that side did, aren't we?

Agree with Oggy on our midfield and lack of pace in the team. Realistically we don't have that many options in midfield. Our "best" midfield of Green Stephens Hollands Jackson simply doesn't work as a midfield 4, I'm certain it won't work any better in the Champ.

Only other options are Wagstaff and Pritchard, as I can't see Hughes getting near the team regularly. Remember Russell, Cook, N'Guessan and Ephraim all played a part last season.
  • We have Haynes who can play in midfield/the wings and inject a bit of pace.
  • But only in 4-3-3

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
    Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

    If life seems jolly rotten
    There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
    Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

    Life's a piece of shit
    When you look at it
    Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
    You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go

Or 4-1-3-2, with Stephens being the 'Pirlo' of the Championship?????

Well said that man! Some of the gloom and despondency on this board over the last week has been well OTT, when you look at the facts about where we were 18 months ago, and where we are now.
