England vs France - Our Chances

edited June 2012 in General Charlton
After a depressing pub chat with mates last night and their views that we stand zero chance of beating France I thought I'd try to prove how we certainly do have a chance , rooney or no rooney and whether ribery's on form or not ! Written a piece on the key battles (Parker vs Diarra, Benzema v Hart etc etc) to try to prove we do still have a chance .
What do people reckon some of the key battles are ?

  • Norfolk Enchance.
  • We stand a chance, but we will need to be very defensive minded and catch them on the break.
  • to quote ash from evil dead 2, we have two chances... jack and shit... and jack just rode out of town.
  • France are good offensively but their defence is far from solid. They may have gone on a good run but some of the performances have been far from convincing. Another thing is that the bad discipline in the squad has not been eradicated with Evra speaking out in the press against Lauren Blanc's tactics.
To say we have zero chance is plain stupid . We have a reasonable chance of getting a result on monday.
  • Are you sure M'Villa is not going to play ? It's a good comparison, but just looking at isolated individual battles isn't really how football works. It's a team game and France have a much better team than England, but if England were to win it wouldn't be the strangest result in football. It wouldnt even be the most surprising result of the group
    phase
  • C'MON ENGLAND!!!
  • Bore draw anyone ?

My thoughts entirely. I don't rate the French team at all, and can't see us doing much either.
  • If we lose this then chances of winning the tournament are gone completely (not that they were high beforehand).

A win, or a draw, which will help us finish top of the group, and we're in with a great chance of making the semi's.
And from there on anything can happen.
  • I can see a 0-0 and would happily take it too

  • No reason why we can't beat them, as long as we stay organised they'll get frustrated and we have the players going forward that can cause them problems.

It's imperative we keep the ball a lot lot better than we usually do though!
  • 2-0 win, really fancy Ashley Young to have a good tournament
  • we are going to be really difficult to break down as Hodgson will have us well organised.

My only concern is if we go 1-0 down, do we have anybody that can get us back level or the tactics to do so?
  • It's a one off game, of course we have a chance.

I was amazed at the number of times they gave ball straight to the opposition in the warm up games, a bit like a carpenter who can't hammer a nail in straight. As you say they have to sort that out.

  • No chance just like Chelsea v Napoli or Brcelona or Bayern Munich

Don't often agree with you but I agree with this.

For me it all depends on how Hollywood Gerrard plays, if he can play to instructions and not decide to go and do whatever he wants we have a chance as I think the team that is put out will work hard for the cause, let's also not forget the French have some injury problems of their own.
  • Good chances. Defend, tackle and chase like demons, play Carroll up front to shake up the debonair French defenders, Gerrard and Parker must get at least a 45% grip in midfield and Terry has to marshall the back line as well as he does for Chelsea. I am expecting at least a draw and hoping for a morale boosting win .. morale boosting not just for the team but for the whole of England and tears and chagrin to the Jocks !!!!
  • We'll beat France.

Think we'll do a lot better than we think in this tournament.
  • sure all of the 45 french fans will make an intimidating atmosphere aswell have to see how England cope with that

  • if Ashley Young plays in the hole he could give their defenders problems.

however i see nothing but a routine 2-0 win for France.
  • I think we'll win 1-0. Lescott or Terry
  • yep 1-0 lescott i reckon
  • This is England with low expectations.

  • Keep it tight and frustrate them then who knows, personally would play 3 in CM and two pacey wingers to support either Welbeck or Carroll.

France are a very good side but they are not as strong as Germany, Holland or Spain imho, if we get keep Benzema quiet and reduce the influence of Nasri and Ribery we have a fine chance. They showed at SA in 2010 they have defensive worries.

The best teams on the planet would struggle to do that let alone a very weak England side Dan ! What happened to going into the tournament with low expectations ? Just because it's a couple of days before the game now hasn't suddenly made England a good side. Yes, sometimes the underdog wins, normally they don't and England won't.

He wont play 3 in midfield. Roy is strictly a 4 4 2 man.
  • England will be like a phoenix raising from the ashes.

Roy has been a strictly 4-4-2 man but look at how outdated the formation looked in 2010 against Germany, against the top sides surely we need an extra man in CM to avoid being overrun. 4-4-2 may work in the other two group games but against the midfield of France, seriosuly question whether Gerrard and Parker can cope on their own.

Also think it is a bit harsh to say this is a "very weak England side", ok it is far from the strongest side we have sent to a tournament but it is misguided to say a side containing Gerrard, Parker, Ashley Cole and Joe Hart is very weak. Add to that we have bags of experience with Terry, the talents of Ashley Young and the youthful promise of Welbeck and Oxlaide-Chamberlain means although we should not be amongst favourites but should be disappointed not to pass the group stage in my opinion anyway.
