Nicky Johns

edited June 2012 in General Charlton
I was just talking to a work colleague who told me that he used to work with Nicky Johns and that Nicky sadly lost his son to bowel cancer a few years ago.

It seems that Nicky and his wife have since set up a campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer called 'Know the Score."

Now, I was completely unaware of this, so I've quickly skimmed the internet to find any references to it and, sure enough, there are a few stories here and there, but what struck me was that I would have thought this would be something we, as Charlton fans, would all be very aware of, seeing as Nicky was one of our former players (and a popular one, at that).

Has this just weirdly passed me by or are others similarly unaware of this?

Either way, I wonder if the club might be able to do something for Nicky's cause next season or even if CharltonLife might want to?

I don't know. Just thought I'd put it out there.

Cheers.

He returned to the Club the season before last, if I remember rightly, for an evening match and there was a collection. I was honoured to speak directly to him.
  • I was aware. Nicky is a very quiet / gentle man, the couple of times that I've met him.
  • By the way, this is the official website:

He appeared at Bromley Addicks with Johnny Humphries a while back...lives in Petts Wood and works for Palarse.
Nice, quiet, unasuming man and was a very welcome guest.
He's not much into the old pro/footballing celebrity thing and likes to keep a fairly low profile.
Henry might like to say more.
  • He's son (Stephen) used to be in my year at school (Coopers Chislehurst) died aged 24 around 4/5 years ago, was a really geunine guy, desperately sad, never met his Dad but would certainly back his cause if it was organised
  • I used to work with both his sons, great lads.

24...Jeez, how sad for all the Johns family....your heart goes out to them.

  • best Charlton goalie I've ever seen
  • Was an excellent keeper - I can vouch for that. I can still recall a couple of great saves he made.
  • best Charlton goalie I've ever seen
He was great - but Deano just ahead for me.

    And Bob Bolder.

  • I'd go with Deano too but Johns was up there.
  • Bizarre memory - I was watching us play away at Selhurst and sitting near the front. Nicky Johns dislocated his finger pre-match and just jogged over to the bench, held his arm out to the then physio who basically rammed the finger back in place - Nicky then jogged back and continued his pre-match routine as if nothing had happened. Might be standard fayre for keepers but it made me shudder!

Best individual performance I've ever seen from a Charlton keeper a night game V Chelsea at The Valley.
By chance Sam Bartram happened to be there covering the game as a journalist. He sought Nicky out after the game and personaly complimented him on his display....says he was very honoured to have met him and been praised by such a legend.
Anyone remember that game? Nicky was simply unbeatable that night (well I think they might have scored one).....we ended up winning I think and but for him would have been thrashed out of sight....quite remarkable and a night I'll never forget.
You would never see a better goalkeeping display if you lived a thousand years!

  • I did inform the club at the time of Stephens death. I thought I also reported it here, but probably wasn't on here then. Very sad.
  • Yer remember that game well, chelsea were flying .Fantastic performance by johns ,It wont be bettered . Think it was season 83 or 84 and it finished 1..1 .....
  • There was something mentioned about it by Led Ferdinand not long ago, sad for Nicky ranks along with Steve Gritt, Terry Yorath and Bob Wilson .. I am sure amoingst many others, no parent should outlive their child
  • 83-84 season. Cheslea agreed to bring the game forward to help us with cash-flow. Johns pulled off about eight flying saves. 1-1 Harris for us and Nevin for them.

    I've seen three amazing goalie performances for Charlton;

Nicky Johns v Chelsea in the above match.

Bob Bolder v Man Utd at Old Trafford 0-0.

Rob Elliott v Barnet in the FA Cup replay.
  • Bob Bolder's performance at Old Trafford was stunning. Best I've ever seen. Don't think we got near their goal all afternoon.

Remember Johns having a great game in a mid-week 2-1 win v Bradford at Odsal stadium 85/86.

Unlikely that Sam Bartram saw Nicky Johns, or anybody else for that matter, at the Valley in 83/84. He died in 1981....

I remember he was in the same class as my nephew at Crofton. I learned this when my sister one day asked me if I'd ever heard of anyone called Nicky Johns. (I had!)

    Very sad indeed.

  • Meant to say....Bermuda is right. We barely crossed the half-way line at Old Trafford that afternoon. Bolder saved at least two bullet headers from Bryan Robson plus all sorts of other dives and blocks.

In the Bradford game, Johns saved a penalty from Don Goodman and we won with a Mike Flanagan near post header. We also got paving slabs thrown at us on the coach back to the station by the very people we'd been having a drink with before the game!

    Graham Tutt?

Thought Illic's performance away to Brum, just before the play-offs was the best goalkeeping performance that I have ever seen.....Brum fans were absolutely "GUTTED" that day, they finished 7th and just missed out on the play-offs.
