I was just talking to a work colleague who told me that he used to work with Nicky Johns and that Nicky sadly lost his son to bowel cancer a few years ago.
It seems that Nicky and his wife have since set up a campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer called 'Know the Score."
Now, I was completely unaware of this, so I've quickly skimmed the internet to find any references to it and, sure enough, there are a few stories here and there, but what struck me was that I would have thought this would be something we, as Charlton fans, would all be very aware of, seeing as Nicky was one of our former players (and a popular one, at that).
Has this just weirdly passed me by or are others similarly unaware of this?
Either way, I wonder if the club might be able to do something for Nicky's cause next season or even if CharltonLife might want to?
I don't know. Just thought I'd put it out there.
Cheers.

Nice, quiet, unasuming man and was a very welcome guest.
He's not much into the old pro/footballing celebrity thing and likes to keep a fairly low profile.
Henry might like to say more.
By chance Sam Bartram happened to be there covering the game as a journalist. He sought Nicky out after the game and personaly complimented him on his display....says he was very honoured to have met him and been praised by such a legend.
Anyone remember that game? Nicky was simply unbeatable that night (well I think they might have scored one).....we ended up winning I think and but for him would have been thrashed out of sight....quite remarkable and a night I'll never forget.
You would never see a better goalkeeping display if you lived a thousand years!
I've seen three amazing goalie performances for Charlton;
Nicky Johns v Chelsea in the above match.
Bob Bolder v Man Utd at Old Trafford 0-0.
Rob Elliott v Barnet in the FA Cup replay.
Remember Johns having a great game in a mid-week 2-1 win v Bradford at Odsal stadium 85/86.
Unlikely that Sam Bartram saw Nicky Johns, or anybody else for that matter, at the Valley in 83/84. He died in 1981....
Very sad indeed.
In the Bradford game, Johns saved a penalty from Don Goodman and we won with a Mike Flanagan near post header. We also got paving slabs thrown at us on the coach back to the station by the very people we'd been having a drink with before the game!
