Because Beckham has done an exceptional job as an ambassador for both the bid and the organising committee.
Beckham is the 'Samsung Olympic Ambassador' .. presumably he's getting very well paid for his 'diplomatic' duties, especially for flogging a few mobiles and flat screen tellys
some of these cynical comments are the Olympic equivalent of the big-yawn description of football being "22 grown men kicking a little ball around". Personally I'm looking forward to the part near me, it's not just a celeb fest and so far it's bringing people out on the streets

There's one reason and one reason only. It's because outside of the Royal family, he's the most famous living Englishman in the World. That's what it's all about having a recognisable face. Credit to him for getting himself in that position, but it does nothing for me.
Just waiting for someone to try a light a ciggie from it. First day and already someone has tried to get far too close to it, for the security team's liking
I thought it might be fun until I found out the torchbearers have to sign away their image rights. Just summed up what I dislike about the Olympics. I don't like Heineken or Coca Cola so I'd go thirsty if I went to one of the Olympic Park events.
But each to their own. If it does it for you that's fine.
I like The Olympics just as I like Chrismas but boh have been spoiled too much by rampant commercialism. Having said that, come the big day I enjoy my turkey and no doubt I will enjoy the games themselves.
Anything to do with MONEY .. and Beckham is there. When he was a young man he was terrific. I can't believe that he is still relevant to any other than 'the meedja' and aging advertising executives. What a trio, Beckham, Coe and 'Princess' Anne. Are these icons of 'Modern Britain
Actually Lincs, they all are, and seriously, I dont think DB is motivated by money, he has a genuine pride for his country. I know the Olympics splits views on here and everywhere else in life but as the footage shows the Torch relay is a celebration and the positives far outweigh any other view, not digging you out as I always enjoy/read your posts just my opinion on this one

I agree, I don't think Beckham is money-driven 100% of the time, and is prepared to put cash aside on plenty of occasions. Of course he can afford to do this, but plenty of people who can afford to be generous & charitable aren't especially (e.g. Bill Gates vs Steve Jobs - both could afford to give away seriously large amounts of dosh - but to my knowledge, Jobs never did).
A small Beckham anecdote: several years ago, DB had arranged to briefly meet a severely disabled boy (who I know personally, have taken to The Valley, etc) after a game at Old Trafford. For genuine reasons, he couldn't (possibly a random drugs test). So, a few days later, Victoria calls the kid up, says she is in the neighbourhood with her father (nowhere near where she lives), and says she is popping round to see him. And while there, gets DB to call the boy. There was no publicity or media coverage whatsoever, not even the local paper.
Olympics. Bring it on. Al rail engineering works postponed from end of June untill September. Most construction in London suspended. Two months unemployed. Now remind me why i should be looking forward to it.

What has three months without railway engineering works got to do with fifteen days of Olympics? Not being funny, it's a genuine question Robbo.
Robbo, I genuinely sympathise with your lack of work over the summer, its not a subject to make a snipe or even try and argue against but surely there has been additional rail engineering work and construction work in the last seven years leading up to the games that would not have taken place with out them? You must be one up not one down overall, if I am way off I apologise as I know nothing about your own circumstances or industry so happy to be corrected.
LU, NR and DLR will not switch off power to tracks over this two month period. They will be testing signalling systems and other safety critical systems that require the track to be energised, therefore no work. The irony is that the drivers and staff are being rewarded with bonuses for working, whereas the people that build/modernise the poxy things are being laid off. They don't want any works jeopardising this period. Furthermore, they don't want visitors to see areas of stations hoarded off, etc. Fortunatly i have just landed a swimwear modelling contract so that should pay the bills.
Three month shut down means a hell of alot of people looking for work all at once. Joy
Yeah but then the argument of "Well, the Olympics will create a bit of work" - I've heard that quoted before. However, generally it's not the same type of employment and it certainly wont be for 3 months.

But each to their own. If it does it for you that's fine.
That auction has been spammed, all the previous sales finished around 3k
That is all.

Good luck Robbo; you got anything planned?
