Signings You Were Underwhelmed With At The Start Of The Season ... That Came Good

As we are about to enter ( if we haven't already) rumour after rumour of who we are going to sign this Summer , turn the clocks back 12 months and we were signing , signing after signing , but who were you really really underwhelmed with ... that has proved you dead wrong.

One for me is .. Bradley 'who ' Pritchard , i thought Chrissy Powell had lost his charlies , but boy has he been been an amazing signing, coupled with Yann we really should relax this summer and let Chris get on with it ... or should we? :-0

  • I wasn't sure about Michael Morrison - didn't seem to have much of a track record, and was not particularly recommended by fans of the clubs he'd played for. Just shows it's not worth listening to them!
  • Not a signing, but Chris Solly has done far better than I expected
  • To be honest I hadn't heard of half of them.

The two that really surprised me because of how quality and consistent they've been are Taylor and Hollands - both free aswell.
  • 1st game I saw at the Valley this season was the People's Cup match. I was being silly and looking for a scapegoat and Wiggins caught my eye. He made one mistake and I could visualize myself blaming things on him for the rest of the season but after a few games, I loved him!

Michael Morrison had had a blinder of a season playing alongside Chris Powell, when Leicester won the League One title.

So it was a no brainer that SCP went back for him.
Like Yann. And Dany and Guessing.
  • Not a new signing but not a regular first teamer... yes, it's all five foot three of Chris Solly, the Boy Wonder. Had major doubts and said as much, now merrily eating humble pie and enjoying every bite! The others were by and large unknowns (to me) so I was more prepared to wait and see if they came good. More fool me!
  • I remember in out first game against Bournemouth, Wiggins didn't get off to the best of starts, giving the ball away a couple of times and kicking it out for throw ins. There were quite a few grumbles being heard around my way, and the usual 'what a rubbish signing'.

I bet those people are eating their words now.
  • For me it was Taylor. Really didn't see what he'd bring to the table but has impressed me with his no nonsense defending.

On the flip-side, Had great expectations for Alonso.......................
  • Pritchard for me. From nowhere to squad regular. Well played.
  • Not at the start of the season, but Yann.

  • Morrison, Yann . Wiggins took the longest to settle in but is class.

I believe I recall reading that several of SCP's summer signings were players that had really impressed him as opponents when he became Charlton manager - Danny Green, Stephens, Wiggins and Hollands for example.

Matt Taylor was skipper and cornerstone on which Exeter City had built their defence around - and along with Hamer in goal, had played very well in Exeter's unexpected 3-1 win at The Valley.

  • I'd say Pritchard as well. Thought he was a bit of a Pardew-esque signing and he'd not get near the team but his performance against Reading shocked me, and then he came into the team with no porblems and that Fulham showing was unbelieveable from a former non-leaguer. He didn't play like a non-league player turning up for the occasion but like a proper player in his element.

Wasn't overly excited about Evina but then with the Wiggins signing it made more sense to me. Wouldn't say Evina came good all that much as he didn't get much of a look in but he looked better than I thought when he did play (I'll let him off his one league start as he didn't have much time to prepare). Although I'm not quite in the Andy Hughes appreciation society as much as others he was another decent one. His work on the ball is occasionally worse than I could have imagined but he's got the odd sublime pass in him and he leaves players with a 'good work-rate' in his wake
  • Was worried about Taylor as it seemed he was a third choice signing for us after Magnus from col u and Osbourne both failed to happen.
  • It is always difficult for a player to come in and carry on from a firm favourite and in this respect I was not particularly impressed with Hamer when he came in after a few games at the start of the season to replace Elliott. While he has a lot of improving still to do - that awful clearance that almost gifted Sheffield utd a goal ,his rush of blood to the head against Orient and letting the ball through his hands against Bury(?) spring to mind- he has done really well overall.
  • Kermorgant has to be biggest surprise, didn't expect him to get into squad ahead of Hayes, but he's been my POTY. Also, Morrison was far better than any of his previous reviews suggested. Pritchard, Hamer and Hollands also exceeded my expectations.

On the other hand, I'd hoped a lot more from Green and Stephens to a certain extent. Let's not even discuss Alonso...
  • I remember stating "Kermorgant will be a great sub, nothing else"

I feel like an idiot now lol

  • On the other hand, I'd hoped a lot more from Green and Stephens to a certain extent.
    Kind of agree, Fred.

Both Green and Stephens have good 1st touch, and great technique ..... but they've not been half as consistantly effective as I'd hoped.

But there again, they are both young and plenty of time to mature and improve.

  • Needed to be convinced by Taylor and Morrison, didn't take too long.

Wasn't expecting much from Pritchard, but in that Reading game showed he was a lot better than any of Pardew's non-league signings. Games since then he's shown it wasn't a one off.

Agree the other way on Stephens and especially Green. Hyped up as Champ players. Before they signed we supposedly had "no chance" of getting them.

Had a feeling Hamer would be a good signing, had done ok but more recently I've felt more confident about him.
  • Underwhelmed by Taylor and Yann

Pritchard I thought was a punt at the time so didn't have much expectation but boy has that one come off from left field!

    same here

    You and me both!

For me though, Yann stands out. I remember thinking Yann who? I really had never heard of him until I realised he was the bloke who missed that penalty. I thought we were really scraping the barrel. Never could I have been so wrong. I think he is (in Division relative terms) the best signing we have ever made in terms of his ability and its impact since I have supported this club.

  • Yann. Thought it was wrong of SCP to drop Hayes for him. Kept it to myself though...
  • I'm not underwhelmed by Green, i knew he'd be quite good but still be slagged off by our fans just like 95% of the wingers we've had at this club.
  • I thought Alonso would be useless. How wrong could i be, apart from 1 bad game, he hasnt misplaced a pass all season.
  • saw bournemouth play a few times last year and preferred the other two central midfielders bartley and robinson, so was under-whelmed with the hollands signing. completely wrong... such a class player, while the other two sit on the benches at burnley and huddersfield respectively
  • Looking back, I don't think I knew a single player that we had signed. Hadn't heard of any of them so didn't really have any expectations at all.

When we signed Yann I wasn't particularly bothered. Part of me thought he can't be that great if its September and nobody has wanted to offer him a contract.

Wiggins didn't look as strong at first as he turned out to be. He had bit of a mare against Millwall in pre season. Wasn't until after 6-7 games I started noticing his pace going forwards.

Which is why we say, "trust in SCP".

    ;o)
