Unwanted pressure from Norwich and southamptons' recent success

edited May 2012 in General Charlton
The spotlight will be on us next season, and I believe alot of people will be dissapointed with anything less than 1st or 2nd place in the championship due to what Norwich and Southampton have recently achieved.

In some ways, like what many people will say, it makes it more believable that we could do the same as what they have done and makes it look possible. I just dont want us to be compared to them all the time and for people to expect us to do what they have done. I for one would be very happy with a playoff place like I hope most people would be.

Im just very happy 'Weve got our Charlton back' and dont want fans expecting us to follow in the footsteps of Norwich and Southampton. I just say keep feet on the ground and enjoy the season; With the way we play and how we have performed this season, of corse the summer with signings etc will make it more clear of our ambitions, but to have a wild guess at our league finish in the championship, I reckon along the lines of 5th. Really no point in guessing now....But I have absolutely no idea what we will be like in the championship!

  • If we make some astute additions we might challenge for the play-offs.
As we are, 10th to 16th.
  • Comparison will be with Brighton ...top last season and now consolidating in the Championship
  • it's unusual for lightning to strike twice in the same place .. as for three times ... welllllll why the helllllll not .. but I am neither expecting it nor putting money on it
  • There will be a lot of strong teams in the Championship next season - apart from the teams that miss out on the play-off, there's the teams coming down from the Prem. At the moment Blackburn, Bolton and Wolves are in the zone - all of those will be hoping to bounce straight back up.

I'd be happy to avoid relegation and delighted with a play-off place.
  • Too late, already wagered away my pension on CAFC getting promoted...

  • Wolves need to get a manager, Blackburn I can see being disarray with the venkys in charge. Don't really need QPR coming down as Fernandez will back them big.
  • We have had back to back promo's before, why not again ?
  • Don't think anyone with a football brain would expect us to do the same as those two. A good season for a promoted club is to stay there. Not saying that's all I expect of us but anything mid table or above will be a very sound season.
  • the spotlight will be on Sheffield Wednesday, the hype that will come out of them, and their media lickspittles will put the pressure on them

  • it's not pressure, it provides a great opportunity to sell the club to players who also have Premier League aspirations

The problem being that the majority of people who watch football do not have a football brain
  • If there is any pressure, then I wont be coming from me. I think we alreday have a squad that can hols its own in the Championship, and hopefully with a few addition there is no reason why we cant be mid table ala Palace.

No problem just so long as they don't start booing, jeering and demanding wholesale changes if we're not top at Christmas as happened under Lord Llewellyn

It's even better known for saving young girls, but I could never get them to save one for me.
  • Wont Sheffield Wednesday have the same pressure?

There are so many bigger clubs with big expectations in the Championship, i'd be delighted with a top-half finish.
  • If Bolton come down with Blackburn and Wolves, and West Ham go up, for me it's one of the weakest Championships in a while, with no clear favourite
  • Probably be the strongest in a while in my opinion. Leicester will spend big again
  • I'm going to be booing at the first defeat. Where's the fun in winning every week? : - )

Turning it around maybe the players will take inspiration from NCFC and Soton showing that "yes, we can".
  • You mean we have to play in the championship? I thought we just went straight into the top flight now. Powell - sort it out!

  • Think we'll do more of a Brighton next season, outside the playoffs by a few places. The Championship will be a really competitive league next year (probably always is) with big teams from top to bottom.
  • I'll be happy to avoid relegation
  • brighton's top half is a more relastic ambition for me. How many new players did Sothampton and Norwich sign?
  • I agree with that. I also think it is quite likely. I wouldn't mind West Ham staying down because I hate them, but I think they would probably be the strongest of the three left in it (I'm assuming Cardiff won't score four goals in 40 minutes).

I do think Birmingham could be strong next season though.
  • Nah, we don't have any sort of media profile so can't see anything coming from that angle. They'll be some that will be under the illusion that we should be able to do a Norwich but most of us will be sensible about it.

That said I'm watching Cardiff now and if that's a top 6 side then who knows as they have been garbage in both legs of the play offs...
  • We have nothing to fear we are easily a top 10 squad already

We have a vibrant sensible enthusiastic manager
We have a club going in the right direction

We have new owners with an unknown level of financial backing

We have a club and facilities that many a player would wish to play within

We have a fan base of I reckon 16 to 20 k depending on how we start

The place has a buzz about it , just enjoy the ride

    I will be 100% honest

    Balls on the line

This time next year we will be celebrating promotion.

  • It is a positive- nobody is going to get on the teams back if they merely consolodate so expectations won't be silly, but the success of teams going up from League One before us shows us and the lads that the Championship is not that great a jump. If you want further confirmation of that, you only have to watch the play offs - Cardiff couldn't defend or pass and looked toothless up front and they had been unbeaten in 10!!!!
  • It is a strong league as it is every year but if West Ham go up and QPR stay up then, looking at the favourites:

Bolton and Brum if they stay down- finanically in trouble, will need to sell. May also lose their managers
Blackburn and to some extent Wolves- board and managerial issues and will sell Hoilett/Yak and Doyle/Jarvis
Cardiff- not a great deal to fear imho
Blackpool if they stay down- depends who they keep hold of and their replacements, expect them, Hull and Brighton to be in and around the top 6-8.
Leeds and Leicester have very good managers and expect them to be up there, already have decent squads and will strengthen, probably will start as favourites.

We have a good chance to be there or thereabouts, an exciting summer ahead.
  • There is nothing to fear in that league

Bar qpr who will need to get something at city next week I can see bolton winning at stoke and Citeh beating qpr

Will be qpr top charlton 2nd

Watch this space and bump the thread next may
  • I think Bolton will fail to win at Stoke. Stoke haven't lost at home since early February, including Arsenal, Everton and Man City. They will want to win infant of their fans in the last home game of the season.

I think it will be Bolton, who need to win! Who will join Blackburn and Wolves.
