Charlton Reserves

Do you think it would be wise to enter a reserves league next season? With the amount of fringe players we have and also the amount of players making the step up from youth to senior football, it might be a good idea. What do people think?

  • Think it will an Under 21 team, which is what most clubs are now doing.
  • I believe its called a development squad now

    pc gone mad....
  • Didn't we try to enter one this season but sent the paperwork in too late?

I think we'll have a team next season.
  • I think yes - it helps players returning from injury and develops the younger players and youth players.

It also keeps players not playing in the first team sharp and intersted rather than warning he bench every game feeling left out and un-needed.
  • Crazy not too imo, though originally a financial decision & many many clubs no longer bother/can afford to. If we can afford it we should do (if there is a league that we can go into?) How are young players to make the jump from Youth team to 1st team with no in between ? Players returning from injury need competitive games to reach match fitness. I wasn't there but by all accounts Sullivan had a bit of a shocker at Preston, his last competitive game was 3+ months ago so maybe not surprising he wasn't up to scratch ?

This is what my thoughts are. We have offered pro contracts to about 10 youth players and i doubt they'll be all going out on loan so they'll need game time.

I think i remember reading this, pretty sure CP was keen.
  • Just don't understand how any club can get by without a reserve team.
  • Even if it's only two games a month, it'll be valuable game time for fringe players and good experience for some of the younger lads.
  • definitely .. there are few if any better ways to maintain and / or reach match fitness and form than playing competitive games .. how else can managements assess a players' true ability ?
  • Should go back to being regional as it was back in the day when our ressies were in the London Midweek League as opposed to The Football Combination.
