  • Fair play to Powell for giving Euell his run out in the last game.

Will be very interesting to see where Alonso goes.
  • Mambo signed a 2 year last year
  • Surprised not to see a few more there to be honest, Hughes, for one. Correct decisions again by Powell. Think warren could be a really good player for a league 2 club or lower div 1 (he played against welling in aug right?)
  • Maybe the club thinks they can get some sort of fees for Hughes, Hayes and Clarke.
  • And of course they are probably not out of contract.
  • No they're not. Could still let them sign for another club for nothing of course.

    Not according to the OS

  • Mambo got a one year deal last year and looks like another one year deal now. Good luck to all of them. Sure Warren and Popo will get sorted soon and Gough seems to have landed on his feet already - -Football League debut at 18 for a keeper is not that bad. Still leaves a big squad and we need other additions to strengthen.

The players released are because their contracts came to an end.

Hayes, Hughes, etc are each under contract for at least another year.
A contract is binding. A club can't just tear up a contract unless the player agrees.

  • Reckon Freddy Warren will go to a League 1 club.

  • thought Freddie looked good at Right back
  • I find it slightly funny the way Powell says of Alonso, that he found it hard to break into the team because of the fine form of the other midfielders, which rather ignores the subsequent signing of Russell in EXACTLY the same position! With Stephens being injured or struggling for form for much of the season, Jackson's injuries, Russell's 2 sending offs, Hollands' triplets and Pritchard's inexperience there were surely opportunities for him to play?

Powell was being polite & professional. Alonso was injured most of the time. By the time he had recovered it was obviously too late to throw him in, when it was obvious his contract wouldn't be renewed.
  • Something clearly wasn't right with Alonso. He looked desperately lacking in match fitness in the JPT. As for the other,s no real surprises. When I (briefly) saw Warren and Popo they looked decent players, but CP seems to know what's needed at Championship level. I've got a feeling we'll be seeing Jase back in a non playing role. By all accounts he's had a great impact on the squad off the pitch.
  • Alonso managed to spend the whole season unfit, yet had no major injury, so it's a mystery. I can't see any clubs wanting to take the risk with him, unless he's on a pay per play type deal?
  • Popo,Warren,Alonso,Gough,Euell,Doc
    I thank-you

  • I think that as players move down the leagues (to less well off clubs) the parent club makes a contribution towards their current contract that is too high for the new club.

Sometimes just giving them away is not enough. McCormack agreed terms to leave last summer (pay off) and then moved on a free. Mou2 and McLeod dud the same the year before (I think).

If any of the players we no longer want are going to move we may well see them asking for a pay off before they go and sigh for someone else. Paul Hayes was released from Preston before he signed for us last summer. His move did't look like a straight forward free transfer.
  • surprised Mambo is still hanging around. He's 21 not a 17 or 18 yr old and still hasn't broken through. He hasn't even been loaned out to a league club to help his progress. I really can't see him making it at Championship level. Will be interesting to see what happens with him. If he stays he must be loaned out to a league team to see if he can hack it but how long do we persevere with him ?

I seem to remember that Curbs reckoned that 22 was the expected breakthrough age. And CBs do, in general, mature relatively late -- I guess the position requires a lot to be learnt and experienced.
  • Agree he's now had a few seasons in the BSP, surely needs the next step up now to see how he handles it. Will a League 2 club take him on loan though? Not like he's been playing for a top BSP team.

Was that Curbs talking about the Prem? We used to keep players until around that age, now we seem to give them a year maybe 2 as a pro, and if nowhere near the first team we release them at 19/20.

  • Yes, I guess Curbs was talking about the Prem, so might not apply. But it does seem that CP and others see something in Mambo.
  • "Alonso is keen to stay in England". Watch him go and sign for another club and turn into the player we all hoped he would be for us.......................
  • Surprised about Popo. Thought he could be the next big thing.

Really hope Gough does well. 6 foot 7, 18 and already made his league debut for Bristol Rovers (although they did lose 4-0). Bright future ahead.

Danny Shittu and Michael Turner were both released at of just under that age.

  • What is the crack with this Leon Clarke, why all of a sudden was he shipped out on loan? did he fall out with some of the squad? or the managerial team?
Id like to see Hayes stay to be honest as i think Danny Hayne can be utilised as a winger as well as as a striker. Having said that might be good to keep N'guessen?
Danny Green is only a bit part player for me so stay or go who knows, but one hell of a strike.
Anyway, im all for looking at who we are gona get rather than let go.

good luck to Euell, wonder where he will WOMBLE to?
  • I think it is a good point about Mambo - we need to get him on loan at no lower than League One now. See what he is made of.
