  • Walk mate, it's not far. Or get a black cab if it's raining.

Sounds to me like you need to buy an off peak travel card on Friday & Saturday. It will need to cover the zones you need between 1&6. 1 probably being King's Cross & Covent Garden. Whereas Charlton is likely to be in Zone 4.
Don't pay for zones if you don't need them as it costs more.

  • Get a Zone 1-4 Travelcard.
  • Get an Oyster, costs a fiver to buy and then you top it up. Someone else will confirm how much you need to spend to turn it into a travel card... Other than that a zone1-4 travel card for the sat.

Beware though, travelling in London isn't cheap.

Why pay a fiver for one when it don't even go on the card nowdays when a travelcard would be cheaper?

    £7.70
  • Seriously mate, it's something ridiculous like £4 for a single Zone 1 journey these days, so a travelcard is your best option. I wouldn't bother with an Oystercard (I don't trust them!) , unless you're planning on coming back to London again , just get a paper zone one travelcard for Friday and a zone 1-4 for Saturday (they're about £7-£8 each and cover all buses, tubes and trains).

    Enjoy your trip.

  • All the info re Travel card prices can be found in the TFL link I posted at 9.20pm.
  • @off-it use my Oyster daily, never had a problem with it. Wish I could put my daily rail ticket on it, would make life easier.
  • Thought you were on the ponce....
  • PAYG Oyster is a rip-off - you pay a peak price for any journey between 4pm-7pm, whereas the extra charge is not incurred if using a paper ticket.

Fair enough, but I don't really fancy taking the chance!

Anyway, not really worth getting one for a to day trip to London though, is it?
  • This website gives you a good overview of the oyster v travelcard conundrum.
    http://www.londontoolkit.com/briefing/travelcard_oyster.htm

However, I would still advise you to get an oyster, so much easier to use, top-up, and leave money on it until you need it next. Even if isnt until next year.
  • All proper tourists bunk their fares.
  • The £5 deposit on the Oyster card is refundable. Oyster costs are capped, so that they never exceed the cost the comparable one day travelcards.

I imagine on Saturday you'd get good value from a one day travelcard, whereas on Friday evening if all you take is a single jouney to Covent garden then a single journey back to Kings X, Oyster would be cheaper.
