Jonathan Fortune

I know he left us late last season due to injury and I know he joined Exeter early March but I just found out he scored an own goal on his debut against MK Dons!

What are peoples thoughts on Fortune? Last time I saw him play was in a friendly against Ashford (kent) last year just before he left us.

  • Good example of our academy but sadly his days with us are definitely at an end. Can't see him ever coming back to us as injuries have ruined his career.

Hopefully he can do well in the lower league's and also do his coaching badges.
  • Well he had two loan spells at Mansfield, maybe he could go there. They are in the Conference Play-Offs this year so hopefully they will come back into the Football League. He might even get another season there.
  • He's played against some of the best strikers in the world but as soon as we got relegated it was like he became half the player he was before. Never understood that.
  • He was superb alongside Costa....who looked after him like a godfather......he never played better than those few golden months they had together.
  • Always good when challenged, either by his partner or a direct challenge from the opposing cf. I thought he was good that first half of 2007-2008, excellent against Alan Lee before being sent off. Should have gone to Stoke where he's have been in a more demanding environment, and one that would have suited his temprement... everyone fighting for the ball, with willfull players around him. Never performed well for me, when he had to impose his character.

  • The News Shopper has a competition running at the moment:

"Pick your favourite Crystal Palace picture in our digital switchover competition"

My entry has got John Fortune in it :)
  • i really thought when we went down from the prem that he would step up and become the rock in the heart of the defence but sadly it was a damp squib and he never really made the best of his obvious talent.

    Very good assesment.................he wasn't a leader/talisman type of character.

Decent player over the years but never the same after his tendon injury. (The first one).

As said above never seemed as assertive as you'd expect a player of his experience to be which we needed as we disappeared down the pan.
  • Never got the credit from fans he deserved (IMHO) as an academy graduate and a player who stuck with us as we sunk through the leagues.
Sadly his career was all-but ended with his injury.

I'll never forget him describing the moment of impact when he turned to Hudson and said 'has my boot come off?' and then knowing from the look on Hudsons face that the problem was not his boot.

  • Always had Shearer in his pocket.
  • Feel a bit queezy now.

Really good player that put himself on the line for Charlton. Proper honest pro. Wish his time with us had ended more happily.
  • Always had Shearer in his pocket.
And his elbow in his mouth
  • Now a free agent, wonder if he could get a coaching role at the club? At 33 years old he ended up playing twice last season for Chatham Town, I really don't see him getting back into his playing career unfortunately.
  • Afraid the injuries took their toll in the end. The Red Robin is certainly right about having Shearer in his pocket. If he can teach that sort of marking (and he scored a few goals too...just that ONE would have been enough) then he could certainly play a role on the coaching staff.

    agree with this.

he had some good games after and before then but he was always prone to nod off during a match imo.
  • Was down the training ground watching the last U21 match.
  • Saw him coming out of the changing rooms at HT of our pre-season match at Ebbsfleet. I'm sure someone said he's coaching now, but not sure...........
  • yeah someone on here said he was coaching with the club
  • Well that's good news then. He's one of our many ex pros I'd love to have back at the club to go alongside Peacock and Euell.

  • Is Rufus coaching the U10s?
  • I did hear Rufus was back at the club actually! Though didn't know what role he was given.

Think he was just dropping a fare off. :)

  • Just saw Henry's back heel through JF's legs to score on TV. A controversial goal, I thought at the time that JF was pulling Henry and was about to give away a pen, others thought Henry was illegally backing into JF and it should have been a free kick to us. they* also showed a 'triffic goal by Rommedahl v Newcastle. am I right in saying Rom never scored a league goal at the valley.
