Well done AlexDyer

(Apologies if this has already been done)

Just read in the programme that after the final whistle at Carlisle, while the anouncements were being made suggesting the team wouldn't be coming out to celebrate, Alex Dyer apparently stayed pitchside, negotiating with officilas to ensure that they WOULD be allowed to. What an admirable, selfless gesture at a time when he must surely have wanted to be in the inner sanctum at the heart of the initial celebraton.

Not knowing much about him beyond his short stint as a player, I admit to being a little underwhelmed when we took him on as coach, and some were quick to point fingers towards the end of last season, but SCP clearly knew his qualities, and went straight for him when recruiting his team. The position of first team coach / right hand man is so easily overlooked but he must surely have played a huge part behind the scenes, and has now shown himself to be a very decent bloke too.

Thanks Alex for a great act on behalf of the fans.

  • Met him a few times when he played for us. A genuinely nice bloke, always cheerful and ready to get a beer in...

Yes good point Paddy...often easy to overlook the bosses assistant/righthand man (ala Mervyn Day).....he's obviously been doing a great job.
  • Well said! I remember WHam were very keen to keep him and he was held in very high regard there. Chris, and our owners, knew what/who they wanted and they got their man. I have thought all season that some of our best signings have been in our team behind the players. Some fantastic groundwork being done for the long-term, sustainable success of our club!!
  • Amazing smiley boat.

very true. Lots of calls for an "older head" etc but Powell knew who he wanted. Another man who knew about Charlton and had served his time as a coach.

More importantly he's someone Powell trusts and respects.

But best of all Bromley Addicks sponsor his kit : - )

  • West Ham know their coaches and they hoped to keep Alex. Powell wanted him and that's good enough for me.
  • Judging by the way he celebrates with the players and with Powell I would imagine he is the perfect stop gap between the players and the manager, someone who will put an arm around the reserves and tell them that they're time will come, encouraging players in times of need like Bradley's goal drought, offering advice to the youngsters, getting the best out of the squad and offering sound input on team selections and training for each game. People tend to forget the coaches and assistants in football, but it seems we have a cracking set up now, from Powell and Dyer through to Matthews and Hart
  • Saw him on the lap of honour trying to persuade the ground staff to join in, was really trying to get them involved, thought that was a nice gesture then.
  • It's always nice to see him round the players. Seems relaxed, happy and always willing to encourage the players inbetween moments. If he's astute like others say he is, then there isn't much else you'd want from a coach.
  • Much better than breaker :)

  • What about Damian Matthews? Another part of CP's 'tight unit' and a very talented individual.
  • I think Damien Matthew deserves his own thread to be frank! I met his at a wedding 2 year ago and him and his Mrs were absolute top draw, my Mrs and his gassed all night, and because he got there only for the evening reception (CAFC at home that day) by the time i met him i was battered, but he still was very nice and gave me loads of time. He was only youth team coach (or whatever his job was then) then so am extra pleased that Powell done the bizzo and bumped him up.

Agree re Dyer tho, top man, top job. Well done him.
