Starting line up for next season ?

I think most would agree that the team/squad will need strengthening next season but from the present squad who are the definite starters at 3.00 pm day one of the new season in the championships without wanting to be derogatory to our existing players, imo the starters would be Solly, Wiggins, Morrison, Holland, Kerm, Jackson, Cort

BWP,Stephens,Hamer Taylor, Green, Waggy would be bench for me. Remainder Prichard, Hughes,Evina Hayes,Euall,Haynes,Sullivan not going to see a lot of in my view.

  • Blimey fella, lets get the end of season festivities out the way first before we start relegating a championship winning player to the bench for next season
  • Think Haynes may make it too
  • mite be a bit early for this i'm afraid.
  • All i've got to say about this thread is... Ben Hamer NO.1 - 20 Clean Sheets encounting!
  • Mike I take your point and in retrospect probably agree with you, this is obviously one of the down sides for players when promotion happens, I am sure SCP is thinking about players for next season whilst concluding this season for the title, but worth thinking about !
  • I've Just put a note on the kitchen calendar to revisit this thread at the beginning of August...............now where did I put that bottle of Bud?
  • All the better players will be sold and Alonso retained to spearhead our relegation battle.

    : - )

Come 1 July we'll have a much better idea about who's staying and who's going. Then we can start to speculate.

    probably 18 and counting ;-)

  • Don't see any problem discussing this. No doubt the powers at The Valley are. Would expect about five out and five in. Need to address central midfield as a priority IMHO.
  • Agree on CM SHG.

I'm hoping we'll bring in 3-5 proven Champ players to take us to the next level. Think we'd also see 2/3 extra players as competition (cover for RB for one).

Expect Euell, Doherty and Alonso to be released (and Mambo?). Clarke will surely be sold and maybe some of Hayes, Hughes etc if the right offer comes in for them.

  • I think Stephens may be better suited to championship football than league 1 as he should get a little more time on the ball. I like having two box-to-box CMs as long as they work well together allowing one to sit and one to go at different times.

For me though, we need another striker (or strikers) to challenge Yann and BWP, another CM and a left winger. Possibly also sign DN'G as an impact sub as he can play anywhere in attack.
  • Although we do need strengthening, it does seem strange to think that we may have to drop players who have been exceptional for us (which is near enough all of them).

The central midfield will be sorted with a more regular attacking midfielder who can bang in some goals. Someone LIKE Darren Ambrose (not him though).

Its worth looking at some of the players who will be going down with Portsmouth or Coventry. The likes of Sammy Clingan are too good for League One.
  • We should definitely keep evina and pritch, as squad players at the least.
  • IMHO, the players who will be let go are
    the obvious 'deadwood' (Doc, Alonso),
those who just don't fit in (Hayes, Clarke),
short term signings (Euell, Hughes possibly)
youngsters who didn't make it (e.g. Mambo)

The 2 recent loanees (Cook, N'Guessan) may become permament signings, I suspect Russell won't.

Depending on whether any youngsters can make the breakthrough, we'll need

    A 4th CB
    RB cover
LM cover if we don't sign Cook and Harriott isn't ready.
CM - someone with the potential class of Stephens, the energy of Russell and discipline of Hughes!
    A replacement for Hayes/Clarke.

The big question is whether some of our current 1st team is good enough for the Championship, as most haven't played (or played much) at that level. I guess we'll only find out when we've had a few games at that level.
  • Yep, Hamer deserves it. He has been part of the defence that has kept us at the top of the table all season. Can't take it away from him.
  • I know it's a bit too early for all this but I'd be glad to see Ephraim back for the season.
  • This thread is about 6 months too early for me!
  • I really hope we give Stephens a chance! He was class at the start of the season and he's only 22!!!

Surely this is exactly the time to be thinking like this ? Winning promotion so early has given us a headstart on every other team in England - lets not squander it with sentimentality.
  • Stephens Hamer and Pritchard will be on the staying list --Hamer will develop into a top classs keeper for years to come.

Now that promotion is assured, this is the time for the talent spotters and money men to get their heads together and plan for next season. I'm sure that Powell knows who he would like/wants, the question of course will be can he afford them and/or do they want to join up.
I can see vacancies in central defence, central midfield, wide on both wings (depending on the shape that CP envisages to play next season) and striker. I think around six of the current squad will depart and will be replaced by a similar number. I am in favour of a small, quality squad and not a squad filled with bench warmers. We were fortunate not to have had too many injuries this season. Signing fit players and keeping them fit is an essential part of any team planning, though Wright-Phillips and Demba ba have shown that not all 'scans' are accurate. I am so looking forward to next season.
  • We will be an attractive proposition for many players, upwardly mobile club, good stadium and training facilities at our level, based in London and a highly respected manager. The way we managed to sign players like Wiggins ahead of rival Championship interest shows this.
  • Will anyone buy Clarke? I'm serious, can anyone in league 2 affords to buy out his contract and will any league 1 take a gamble? He also has has attitude issues in the past.
  • SCP stated at the beginning of this season that he wanted to have two quality players for each position in the team, we then saw Chris virtually buy his squad within the first month and left others behind, this action proved successful as we know, imo our manager will have targets in his mind and has probably been pro active on this front for a while knowing promotion was in our own hands, it would not surprise me if we see early business again so he get the balance and shape right early with two players again but with quality at this new level, clever man our boss !
  • Much will depend on how much we have to spend but at least five in I think and at least five out.
  • on basis of 2 in every position, think we r going to need right back, centre mid, left mid & 2 strikers. hamer improving all the time & def a worthy starter in championship
