There’s nothing like a promotion to bring a few of us virgin-posters out of the woodwork. Just got back from Carlisle and really enjoying reading everyone’s messages today, what a wonderful time to be a Charlton fan!
Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m as glad as anyone to be out of this wretched division – but I have thoroughly enjoyed these last 3 years. My first ever game was at Upton park ’92 so I’ve not experienced the third tier before, but our fall from grace has just made me more determined than ever to get behind them team and go to more games – and I’ve loved every damn minute of it.
So many memories, theres the bad – missing my 11:30pm train (and work the next day) following a bitterly disappointing penalty shoot-out. Then theres the good – going two-up at Wycombe and then getting a call to tell me my nephew had just been born. First time I’ve left early to ‘beat the traffic’ – I’m just hoping that when he learns of my sacrifice he’ll start supporting his Uncle’s team rather than following in the footsteps of his Millwall supporting father.
Then there’s the downright ridiculous – the horizontal rain at Yeovil, literally pouring out water from my jacket pockets. You had to be there…League one at its finest. Sodje was sent off but we still bagged an equaliser.
And then there’s my two footballing highlights. Last year at Carlisle, Paul Benson in injury time…4-3… After travelling all that way, I didn’t think it could get any better…but then yesterday it did....I don’t think I’ve experienced expectation like we had in those final 15 minutes yesterday. Those of us who made the trip, we just knew didn’t we, it was destiny. Had a great night last night in Carlisle, there was a good ska band on in the rock bar that just rounded the day off perfectly. My wife had my beer count at 14 throughout the day/night. Some celebration!
My long suffering wife is good enough to accompany me to away games. As you can see from my username, she’s also a Coventry fan. They face Millwall on Tuesday, Donny on Saturday – then Southampton on the final day. Currently sitting 4 points behind Bristol City. It’s not looking good for them but I’m praying they stay up to give us some good old-fashioned family football rivalry next season, and plus it’s a relatively easy away day for us all.
And finally, well done to each & every one of you who have followed the team over the last 3 years, I really hope you’ve enjoyed it all as much as I have. Hoping next year will be just as much fun… I’m already looking forward to some quality day/nighters next year in Nottingham, Brighton, Blackpool, Cardiff and erm…. Croydon.
Forever CAFC & proud!!
