How much credit does CP deserve?

  • I already hold him in higher esteem than Curbs and I never thought I'd be saying that. He has re-built this club from the ground up. Not only by assembling a great squad of players, but by also bringing in a great backroom staff. I was a bit worried at the appointment of Dyer as his assistant as I (and many others I recall) thought he needed an experienced No2 and thought that this was maybe an appointment of the heart, not the head. I take it all back. Lawrence Bloom has also ensured that the team have been in top shape.

A huge thankyou has to go to Mr Slater and the rest of the board, firstly for being brave enough to appoint a rookie manager and for then giving him 100% backing, despite the disappointment of last spring.
  • I don't know what influence Keith Peacock has on day to day management, but have a feeling that he also deserves our thanks.
  • I agree about Keith. He somehow managed to structure a rag tag and bobtail side together in his brief spell last year, and I nevertheless went to Tottenham expecting complete humiliation. We lost there but it wasn't too bad (actually in terms of scoreline better than at Fulham). Yeah Keith is old school but has a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience to call on and Chris has had the wisdom to recognise this.
    A question.
If a Charltonian were to be in line for a gong of some sort this summer, should it be Keith or Chris?
  • You have to give him total credit for choosing the right signings and loans, that in itself is a hard call. To get them to play as a unit from day one was a massive achievement.

Changing the attitude from within the club and the atmosphere on the terracing from what it had become over the decline years is incredible an achievement as well.

I had a few doubts as to tactics and subs in the first half season he took over but even the best of managers get it wrong occasionally, also you can't make a silk purse out of a sours ear, or something like that, which sums up what was lacking in the squad he inherited.

It is easy to forget he is still learning the managers trade and may need time and support when things don't quite work out.

When the football stopped flowing we were able to grind out results. During the later stages of the season we seemed very Curb'esque. I remember when WHU stuffed us 5-0, curbs was not happy and did something about it, similar to the Notts Cnty result, shows CP has a tough side underneath the nice guy image.
  • you just know that Sir Chris Powell is the type of class act that the players really wanna bust a gut for him, there's something so endearing about him
  • chris powell is now in god status in my my opinion. nice guy and great manager. the job he has done is incredible and proved me wrong. i hold my hands up, i didn't think he was capable/experienced of such an achievement but boy he was. deserves the all the credit in the world. he is now our messiah.
