we got promoted ????

If I remember correctly, the Championship winning season of 1999/2000 was a bit like this one. We stormed ahead of the pack from Xmas onwards but couldn't finish the job off until late in the season. I believe we played at home on Good Friday and needed a win to gain promotion. As per usual we f****d it up & lost - meaning we had to wait to see what Man City did the next day (our game was brought forward for TV and the others played on the Sat) - otherwise it was off to Ewood Park on Easter monday.

Not wanting to miss our impending promotion I & a mate decided we would go to Ewood come what may & set off Sat morning to play some golf on the way. We planned to play a couple of courses in N.Wales on the Sat & Sun before driving to Blackburn on the Monday. We reached N Wales early afternoon and decided we would play 2 rounds at a course called Pennard. Started the 1st round before 2pm and so had no idea how any of the games were going (for the un-initiated you don't take radios etc onto a golf course). We manged to finish just before 5pm..............just enough time to rush to the car to listen to the classified results on Sports Report and to hear that Pompey (?) and beaten Man City 1-0 and we were up !!!!!!!!! Didn't have much time to think about it as we had to go out & play another round before it got dark, but certainly sank a few beers that night !!

so, can you remember where you were when we last got promoted ???????

  • I was 12 at the time. Sat at home with the family, we saw it come through on Sky and my old man gave me my first glass of champagne to celebrate!

I don't remember to be honest but I do recall it was a lousy flat way to get promoted.

In 1986 I was supposed to be playing cricket and by the time the game was called off it was a few hours too late to head off to Carlisle (although I remember discussions about chartering a plane from Biggin Hill). Spent the afternoon watching teletext.

I just realised.....it was 1981 I missed through not playing cricket. 1986 I was there and made it back to Wakefield in time for my Uncle's Ruby wedding celebration

I bet you didn't blame the club for not laying on an extra plane for you.
  • Been married a year and owned my own house for two. 3 years before my first was born.
  • I was in pretty much exactly the same situation GolfAddick, albeit a bit closer to home at Birchwood and remember my dad and I going back to his car and hearing the news. Lee Bradbury I think it was.

Living on my own in a nice one bedroom flat in Brockley Rise, earning more than I could spend, in f******g clover if I did but know it...

    I know it now.

It never occured to me until you just suggested it.

(Note to self: Must be more imaginative)

  • I was ony 4 at the time......
  • Yeah went up there to see the formality. Don't get much chance to see Charlton win things so have to make the effort. Went to Birmingham for the 0-0 in '98 although there were too many if's of us going up that day
  • The Blackburn game was on the easter monday so we spent the whole weekend in Blackpool before hand getting right on it!

After the game I caught Simon Royce's left Puma King boot in the celebrations!

Remember leaving Ewood and some bright spark had thought of the idea of making promotion t-shirts and selling them for a tenner a pop, he must have made a fortune that day.
  • I was on a ban :0(
  • I watched it on Gillette Soccer Saturday.

As Hugo said, it was lousy and flat.
  • we drew with pompey on the good friday 1-1

on the saturday ipswich lost 3-1 at qpr ensuring our promotion the same day man city beat tranmere 2-0

on the easter monday the travelling hordes made their way to see us crowned champions with a draw at blackburn but we were only confirmed as champions cos man city drew at pompey 2-2

i was recovering from a stinking hangover when we were promoted courtesy of the super hoops

and i was in blackburn with the other travelling addicks when we were confirmed as champions

I still haven't recovered from being kissed by Ian Cartwright outside Ewood Park!

  • Don't worry, he's a good-looking geezer!
  • Was 23, been living with the missus for 12 months and desperately trying to find a venue for our wedding the following summer.

Wife is adament we were there, I don't remember a thing about it. Looking at the fixture list I can clearly remember being at the eight aways before it, and the West Brom one after, but for some reason I am drawing a blank on this one.
  • Man City away on a Sunday that season was a blinding weekend up there, with a 27yr old @Riscardo patrolling the Manchester clubs in some rascal Gianluca Vialli / skool disco get up, and about 5am Covered End on here pulling a blinding prank on a very drunk East Terrace which resulted in him having a face covered in soot.

The "unknown" reason wouldn't in any way be drink-related, would it?
  • At home studying for my GCSEs, listening to radio 5.
  • I was 3.5 and didn't have a fucking clue what Charlton or anything else was.

    That was a classic !
As for the game I was at Blackburn with a few others. We bought some cheap champagne which we were necking, walking back to the station. For some reason the locals didn't take too kindly to our celebrations & offered some pavement dancing. Fortunately (not saying for who) the police turned up in the nick of time :-)
  • Living near Dunfermline not interested in Charlton and Scottish Football was rubbish. Moved to London in 2002 to be with lovely hubby and my life changed when I went to the Valley to see premier football. Got sucked into the Charlton family ended up buying a season ticket and saw 2 relegations in quick succession so looking forward to Carlisle on Saturday with nails painted red to stop the nervous nibbling of finger nails.
  • Was my mates wedding on the saturday when we went up. Travelled uo to Blackburn in which i woke up in some womans bed to look at my watch and realise i had 20 minutes to get home, showered and dressed before my mates picked me up at my flat. Fantastic times.Drunk all weekend, mates, football and lovely brunette thats when life was rock and roll for me.

That was the key result, I was in my car driving around the North Circular through Bounds Green when I heard the Ipswich score, which I celebrated while driving (though not too much!)

    It all comes flooding back...
  • I was there well pissed up so no different to this Saturday
  • At Ewood managed to miss train back to Manchester because we stayed behind for the celebrations. Meant getting a taxi to Preston and getting a train rammed full of Sweaties and had to stand as far as somewhere like Stafford. For some reason I clearly remember Andy Lopata being there with his face painted, he looked like a swan vesta. As someone has said, game was flat and dull.

For Carlisle 86 was in New Delhi so listened for the results on Short Wave radio and treated myself to a beer the next day.

Carlisle 81 was a big drink before and after. Stopped in Preston on way back for more beers and a curry and got last train back. Arrived Euston at 7.30am Sunday, a total wreck of a human being. Slept all day. happy days.

For Carlisle 12 I will be mostly watching Jeff Stelling

Blackburn game was a blur. Aint got a clue what I'd had over the day celebrating.

Ended up getting nicked when we got back to London what sobered me up a bit! Hope it will be a similar day at Carlisle apart from the 'getting nicked' part!
