After the City Addicks do was cancelled tonight I decided to sit down and watch the club's Centenary History DVD for the first time. I was absolutely overwhelmed by this 3 hour history lesson on our great club. So many memories, good and bad, were brought back. The story almost defies belief at stages and if it was a fictional programme it would be panned by the critics as being totally unbelievable. The overall production is superbly done and at the end I was quite emotional and just so proud to be a Charlton supporter.
It was brilliant to see the footage of Don Welsh, Jimmy Seed and Sam Bartram along with all the more recent faces. What a shame that there was no TV coverage of historic games like the 7-6 game versus Huddersfield, the 3-1 promotion win against Preston, the 4-1 comeback win against Bolton to avoid relegation & that Leaburn v Wickes 1-1 draw against Chelsea. My only reservation is that without these pictures the story can feel a little incomplete at times. With them the DVD would probably have lasted for 5 hours+.
If you have never watched the DVD I would thoroughly recommend it. I even learned that the Royal Oak used to be used by the players as changing rooms back in the 1920s.
It certainly puts our current predicament into context and you realise that we have overcome far bigger difficulties in our past. At the end of the day, the 2006/7 season will just be another chapter in the story of Charlton Athletic football club.

I had seen some of the archive footage before but some I believe was unique to this DVD.
What's nice also is the bonus footage of the fight for valley and the Play Off final highlights.
All in all a must for addicks young and old.
