If Portsmouth fold what happens to Promotion and Relegation?

If Portsmouth Football Club folds from their £58 million pound debt how will the Football league sort out the league structure namely Relegation and Promotion?

Do only two teams Doncaster and Coventry get relegated, and four teams from League One get promoted, or does Bristol City currently occupying 21st place in the Championship now become the third team to be relegated.

What happened in previous cases?

  • I think it works from the bottom up rather than top down if that makes sense (i.e. Brizzle not being punished).

I've seen it on here before somewhere.
  • Millwall will be six points worse off for starters !!

Is it only if Pompey dont finish the season rather than go bust after?
  • Celtic will be given their spot.
  • Portsmouth would be regarded as one of the relegated teams , so it would be two others to drop .

If they fold it would mean reprieves for a team in League One who finish fourth from bottom and the second from bottom club in League Two wouldn't be relegated to the Conference either.

I think the Conference is the highest level that a phoenix AFC Portsmouth would be allowed to join.
  • If they dont see out the season all their results will be cancelled. It is very unlikely now but some teams were worried a few weeks ago.
  • It's not going to happen though is it, this is the usual administrator tactic we've seen with Plymouth, the Nigels, Portsmouth a while back... the whole "there's a significant chance of the club going out of existence" just seems to be the usual last minute tool they use to encourage potential buyers to step up to the plate/move quickly.

Of course one of these days ONE of these clubs will go pop, but I don't think it will be a Pompey or a club with recent top division pedigree, there will always be a wealthy consortium somewhere attracted to one of them. I feel when one does go it will be a Torquay/Hereford style Div 4 unsexy club with no recent history.
  • It ŵill be Pompey if someone doesn't appear with the best part of £50m and a real plan for the rest. The message yesterday was that there has been no interest whatsoever. Portsmouth have been here before and the only takers were foreigners who had money to burn and fancied a bit of Monopoly football. The stakes are much higher this time around and I'm not so sure there will be any takers, in which case, they will go out of business.

Portsmouth is a prism onto the world of international finance post the fall of the Communist block. Gadaymak's debts are secured against Premier League payments, he still owns Portsmouth assets, Portsmouth always run a significant loss in the premiership, they then run a significant loss in the champ.

Who wants to take on asset that has no potential to make money? A stripped down and leaner Palace has potential. It is very likely to be Pompey. They could never have sustained a Premierhip stay, they are a loss making club, only dubious finance from dubious businessmen meant they stayed longer than a few seasons.
  • Investors won't need an initial investment of 58 million, but to get it out of the shit whatever they agree to pay debtors they'll be running at tens of millions of debts for the next few years. Only really does make sense taking them over when virtually all debts are dissolved and they are at rock bottom. Whether that be Blue Square Premier or lower. Conversely you'll actually start making money again.
