Carlisle vs. Charlton | 14th April 2012 | Match Preview, Predictions, Teams, News & Views

And so the day is finally (maybe) here. An away trip to Carlisle could see the Addicks promoted in the North West for the third time if Chris Powell’s men can notch up their 15th away win of the season and Sheffield Wednesday buck the recent trend of their form and fail to beat Colchester in Essex.

Carlisle themselves are battling for a playoff spot and currently sit level on points with 6th placed Notts County and have been on a great run of results (as were Walsall). The last ten games have seen Charlton’s opponents only lose once – which was back at the beginning of March – and they are undefeated in six at Brunton Park. The Cumbrians will be without 15-goal Lee Miller and midfielder Chris Chantler for the rest of the season and the solid Charlton defence will be hopeful of extending their run of shut-outs from open play to seven games.

Two games in 72 hours started to show in the legs of some players on Monday against Walsall, yet a week(ish) of rest and a dangling promotion carrot should have whichever team Chris Powell chooses ‘well-up-for-it’. For the umpteenth time this season, there will be no changes at the back with Solly, Morrison, Wiggins and the increasingly impressive Leon Cort lining up in front of Ben Hamer. Valley hotshot Dany N’Guessan operated well out on the right hand side against Walsall and linked well with Lil’Chris whilst bagging himself a goal in the process. The suspension ridden centre of the park is likely to see Dale Stephens link up once again with the terrier Bradley Pritchard in midfield whilst Captain Jackson had an effective return to action with a couple of jinking runs and can count himself unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.

The Terminator-like qualities of Yann Kermongant continue to defy physical science rules, and the Frenchman only needs to run through a couple of more brick walls to make it all worth it. Alongside him, Bradley Wright-Phillips will be hoping to continue his best ever scoring season and it would be fitting for our top-scorer to seal our return to the Championship.

Five years of hurt could come to an end on Saturday and you get the feeling that the players and the management are going to do everything in their own power to get this finished as quickly as possible – although it is somewhat out of their hands. We’re going to win 2-0 but unfortunately Sheffield Wednesday are going to continue their incredible run by defeating Colchester. We’ll do it against Wycombe though.

Well done and good luck to all of those travelling – Come on you reds!!

  • Good Preview WSS. Got a little feeling Wednesday will drop points this weekend.
  • North West.......

    1-1
  • Tough tough game. We were looking very jaded on Monday. 2-0 defeat. Both sheffields win. That leaves a gap of 3 and 5 points respectively with the pressure massively on for Wycombe.
  • I reckon there'll be some twists and turns in this and that we'll be going up for part of the afternoon... but both us and Wednesday will end up as draws.

Nice to see some optimism for the best team in the league.
  • I would be surprised if we get promoted this Saturday (I expect Wednesday to win), unless the 80s Carlisle factor strikes again. Perhaps we should bring Steve Gritt along as a good luck charm
  • I think we will get a draw which will be a good result up there, and expect both Sheffield teams to win.

Promotion next week when we beat Wycombe and Sheff Utd draw at Franchise

Sorry if that is too negative.
  • Colchester have a decent record at home to Wednesday....

Going to be a long trek but a weakened Carlisle side will take a battering from Kerms and Chris Solly a scores his first goal of the season, meanwhile our next signing Wordsworth scores a 30 yard screamer to beat Wednesday.
  • tough fixture for a jaded side , too tough to call
but having no balls and bricking it can see a draw or defeat

  • As always damo full of optimism.

Ive been thinking we will get a draw but I'm starting to think were going to do them 2-0

Being top doesnt mean we are unbeatable. We have the hardest game of all the top 3 this weekend. I will happily be proved wrong, but am also wary that we will all look a right bunch of idiots if things dont work out. There is a balance between pessimism and blind optimism - like the 5-0 predictions before Notts County and Colchester.
  • 1-1 Zoko for them Kermorgant for us
  • Both draws
  • Great preview @WSS though one correction. Carlisle are unbeaten in 17 at home, last defeat was Sept 10th.

Really don't know what to predict for this one. Head says the loss of Miller is a big blow for them, not just in goals but for how they line up as he was a key part if their formation. That any nerves the players currently have will be eased by bein away. That BWP ie due to find the net again.

Heart though has been broken a few times in recent years, and that it historically just isn't in Charlton's genetics to do things comfortably, and there is more nerves and excitement to come.

At this point in time, I think I'd take a draw now, but the closer the game approaches the less I feel Saturday will end in defeat.
  • leaving at 5 in the morning so have to believe its going to happen for us. just couldn't risk missing to be honest. head says not saturday but heart says why not? if we pull it off it will be feel so much better that i took the risk if we don't then will feel as expected. surely we'll do it against wycombe and that will be another exciting day. this is why i'm a football fan isn't it?
  • They'll be itching for revenge after the mauling we gave them at the valley, and obviously up for it even more as they're going for that 6th spot.

Not too sure, I just having a sneaky feeling this'll be it. 1-0 win, for us and colchester.
  • Great stat Smudge, I was basing on last 6 games, just missed a word. That's a great record for them.
  • The time is fast approaching for us to reclaim what is rightfully ours,

  • Another anxious evening with the headphones on listening to Player.

I reckon a 2-0 defeat for us, a draw for the Wendies and a win for Sheff Utd.

I'd be more than happy for three draws. Do they still have the football pools?

I aint been this excited about a game in Ages
  • Head says 1-1, heart says 2-1 to us.

Same. Just keep logging on and off of here.
  • The most Unproductive week ever
  • Me too, I ended up leaving at 2 yesterday because I can't concentrate, it's killing me
  • 2-0 to the Addicks. BWP and Solly to send us to the brink. The Wendies will probably win but that matters not as it's all about us and what we do. The Wycombe game will see us up.

    COYR!!!
  • Tough place to visit anytime and they are more than decent at home. 51 years of following Charlton compels me to say a narrow defeat.
  • 23:30 LONDON (Victoria Coach Station) Carlisle 12:15 12h 45m 1 £34.50... Bargin, just the 12hrs tho..
  • carlisle 1 charlton 1
weds to drop points meaning a win at home to wycombe will be enough
  • Waggy returns to bring much needed fresh legs and hughes sures up the midfield.

Well done those guys who paid for the team to fly up. Worth it to see yet another 1 - 0 win for the Addicks

Won't be there but still hope we go up for everyone whose making the trip. If not there will still be Wycombe.
