why " Athletic "

does anyone know why we're called charlton " athletic " as opposed to city, united, town, rovers, north end etc etc?

  • Other than 'Real' in Spain, do other countries' clubs have these "add-ons" like we do?
  • Because footballers are athletes and we're Charlton... Charlton Athletic
  • Charlton's not a city and as it wasn't a merger united might not have been seen as sensible. Some of the others would have been taken by other local sides.

Oldham were in the top flight then but much as I hate to suggest there was a southern league side called Athletic on the Isle of Dogs
  • It's the South London pronunciation of "Arthritic" and comes from when the local "face" turned up waving a Haddock nailed to a stick. Someone said, "Why you waving a dead 'addock", to which he replied: "He's not dead, he's Arfritic!"
  • Because those other names are shite.

Have a look at any American sport.
  • I'm glad it's Athletic. Hull Tigers, Derby Rams, Millwall Lions.....Charlton Haddocks doesnt quite have the right ring to it ?
  • Oldham & Wigan Athletic too
  • Along with Sunderland.
  • There used to be more than one Villa too i think
