Ben Hamer

Really warming to Hamer as the season's gone on. He's only 24 so plenty of time to get better; best keeper since Deano; has personality /keeper madness;
some great saves recently; and has added a new dimension with his occasionally brilliant passing/kicking. I also noticed how at the end of the Orient game went all round the ground applauding the crowd on his own. There's more to come.........

  • He seemed to have a bit of a sticky patch a few games back. Hopefully he's come through that now and is a better keeper for it. Absolutely top drawer save on Saturday. Good luck to him.
  • I know some people don't, but I really like him. As you have said he's young & imo will only get better. Agree that he is best keeper we have had since Deano.

Robbie Elliot is a better goalie than Hamer
  • Apart from his handling, distribution and long range shot stopping I agree...

when i asked bob bolder on saturday what he thought of hamer, he liked him a lot, reckoned he was the best keeper we'd had for a few years, that he was part of the reason why our defence has been so tight and that the back 4 are very confident with him behind them.

he's only a europeam cup winner, what the hell would he know anyway?
  • Agree, his early season flapping has been replaced by a competent & confident display, can only get better.
  • Hamer is not a problem we have to worry about good enough goalie in this league and the championship , how many full seasons has the lad had in his pro career

    Blimey
  • His bad spell coincided with his ankle injury so you cant be too hard on him.To me though if was the reserve keeper I would feel the gaffer had zero confidence in me,playing Hamer half fit in front of him.
  • I think he will become a top keeper for us -definitely will be our no.1 next season and I'm happy with that.

  • got to agree and i reckon he will get better and better, hope his on a long contract
  • Must admit I had big doubts at the start of the season, but my opinion has totally changed. He's getting better and better and his all round game has definitely come on. His end of game emotions and spirit has made a lot of people including me like him even better. He's has the makings of being a top class keeper.
  • He will be a prem player within 5 years.
  • Never in doubt boy is class .
  • I was the one who questioned CP when he described him as a very, very good footballer, but I can certainly see that he has the potential to eventually be that. I also have a feeling that Nick Pope is going to be excellent with experience, a feeling which was confirmed from inside the camp. Like all supporters I certainly appreciated Ben's acknowledgement on Saturday.
  • I've always talked him up, glad people are recognising that he is a 'good goalkeeper' but can become a 'superb goalkeeper'.

  • Dont agree that Elliot is a better keeper. The save that Hamer made on Saturday from Spring's shot was top drawer, the ball was moving and dipping all over the place.
  • He needs to play the percentages a bit more with his kicking, too often he finds an opposition player and in the Champ/Prem he will get punished more often
  • I'm not his biggets fan but he made two world class saves on Saturday and his distribution has been top notch for most of the season.
  • Hard to compare Elliot and Hamer, maybe Elliot wouldve flourished under this new team. He always seemed to lose consistency late in the season. Top guy though and living the dream at Newcastle. Very Proud of him. BUT Hamer is our keeper now and he is doing us proud.

  • Need a more experienced goalie in the camp for me not saying gamer shouldn't be number 1 but someone he
Can bounce off when things are going his way
  • Or hamer for that fact bloody iPhones

    Randolp > Elliot > Hamer
  • Strange thing is that Pardew rated Randolph higher than Elliot.

Pele isn't exactly renowned for his ability judging

obviously a pure coincidence that the newcastle goalie coach is best mates with elliots agent
  • He has had his shaky moments but has improved massively since he arrived, he has a very good coach as well.
Very pleased for the lad, I would like to see him command the area more which he was doing on Saturday!
  • Love Hammer and an excellent keeper for our level, then again ive always been a fan since the first game I saw him play for us, very very good. But concerned that him and morro clearly don't talk/listen to one another anymore, hopefully whatever has happened will clear soon.
  • Hamer has had the benefit of being behind a decent back 4 which Elliot never really had during his 100 or so matches so Robbie was often exposed.

I personally don't think there is much to choose between them at present but I sense Hamer has more drive than Elliot and will ultimately achieve more in the game. He has improved over the course of the season and made two great saves on Saturday.

He has certainly been a more than adequate replacement for Elliot and, if we do gain promotion, is capable of making the step up in my view.
  • I would say that out of our starting eleven, he is the one who gives me the most nervy moments. However, he has turned out to be a bit better than I was initially expecting.

I like his confidence and he clearly is bit of a wind-up merchant, which is something I think every decent team has. Exactly the same reason I'm a big Joe Hart fan - he wears his heart on his sleeve.
