VFR/ Mull of Kintyre: am I the only one...

edited February 2007 in General Charlton
on here who's actually been there?

My Dad came from Campbeltown, the nearest big place (and where the pipe band on the original are from) so I'd been going there on holiday all my life...couldn't believe it when VFR started. I've got a wee place near there now, and we drive to the end of the road at the Mull every now and again - was last there on New Year's Day.

Interested to know if any other Charlton Lifers have ever been??

  • My parents live about 40 mins outside of campbeltown, in a village called carradale. its really nice up there. I try to go up every now and then, its just so far.
  • I've been to Kintyre (had a couple of cold, wet August holidays on the Scottish west coast!) - not to the Mull though - I think that is the end of the peninsular ?
  • Well didn't we get VFR from Nottingham F, but anyway i've been to Mull so i'm half-way there, even if it isn't the right Mull Of Kintyre.

Yes - it's right at the end, 7 miles along a winding single track road. Sometimes not possible to get there if there's low cloud - or even mist rolling in from the sea...

(Weather tends to be better in May/June rather than Aug, but who knows?!)
  • Yeah - I changed "summer" to "August" - since August in Scotland is autumn really! Been on a beach in fog on Kintyre - even paddled in the sea a bit.

Went up Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg arete in June last year - fantastic weather, warm and sunny ........... and thick snow at the top! Great weekend.
  • Thanks for the link, oohaah - nearly as emotional for me as the Play Off Final commentary (sorry, family connections and all that...)

The video was actually filmed at Saddell beach, with the castle in the background, which is on the East coast of Kintyre not far from Carradale (where Pardy Army's parents live). You can rent the castle through the Landmark Trust - it's the real deal, spiral staircases, painted ceiling, ghosts, the lot.
  • Played a tournament at Machrihanish Golf Club about 10 years ago and stayed in Campbeltown

Played like a man with no arms and missed the cut, but still managed to collect some heather and dry it. Every year from then on me and the old man transfer the "lucky heather" into the front clear sleeve on our STs

So let's hope your lucky heather can prove its worth this season...

  • I'll get you some more next time I'm there!!
  • Good stuff mate!

Is the air force base still there? Im sure the buggers used to wait till I was at the top of my swing to blast past at 400 mph at 150ft! Well thats my excuse anyway....
  • It's mothballed - and probably going to be sold off completely soon. They had an airshow there last summer - awesome stuff even for a non-plane spotter like me. Some horrible stealth bomber did a quick round trip up from Farnborough to 'say hello'. Could imagine they would certainly put you off the golf swing...
  • Its only 5mins up the road for them mate!!
