Soapy is spot on, can't really see why people are shocked, Galloway represents Muslims more than he represents other people and Bradford is full of them.
His main chant is stop the wars in Muslim countrys so its a no brainer really.
I have a lot of family in West Yorkshire and have stayed in the area many times and to be honest Bradford are welcome to him.
I suppose he had to go out and find employment somehow after the Iranian backed Press TV were taken off air for not having an editorial office based in London.
Like him or loathe him, he has the balls to speak his mind and stand up for what he believes in, not what people want to hear. Bear in mind he is a socialist so will not appeal to all voters, but he does speak a lot of sense, although i dont agree with everything he believes in.
Siv, his testimony in the US was great to listen to. If only Tony Blair had some of his balls, the UK wouldnt be in suffering the effects of its foreign policy so much.
His whole background is interesting, especially why he is so involved in middle east affairs.
He is now one of, what, 650 MP's? His stance should be allowed in that context in order to broaden and inform debate. If nothing else he is a pretty good communicator.
Gorgeous George gets acres of publicity but at the end of the day - and even he admits this - he has no influence or power whatsoever.
The only reason I admire him is that he tipped that Blairite clone Oona King out of her safe seat in Bethnal Green, after she crazily was an outspoken backer of Tony & George's Iraqi adventures in the most Muslim populated seat in the country.
I think he can be a bit of a self-serving twat BUT we live in a free country and I think its great that a bloke like him can give the big two parties a bloody nose despite the fact he has no money backing him at all.
It's what democracy is all about and shows what a good organiser/PR man he is to pull off a win like this.
I think this shows how split Britain is now . I agree that the mainstream political parties are under a bigger threat than ever because many feel that no one is speaking for them . In my view Ed Milliband is winning the battle of ideas but does not come over well on the media so Labour is suffering as a result .
I too have no time for Galloway and believe him to be a cynical opportunist ,I suspect many want to give all of the political establishment a bloody nose .
Ironically this is good news for Cameron because if Labour loses seats like this to Respect as well as many north of the border to Salmond then unfortunately he could an overall majority next time because tactical Labour voters withdrawing support from the Lib Dems will ensure another 20 to 30 Tory MP's given the quirks of our electoral system .
This is the man who said on his Talksport talk in show that Mugabe and his henchmen were right to steal land from white Zimbabwean farmers as that was what the British did to them.
That said a bloody nose for the 3 main parties is no bad thing for democracy and I only wish UKIP were as adept as he is at gaining success from a minority position as most decent, ordinary working people are totally disenfranchised as things stand.

About a third of Tory MP's are essentially UKIP in all but name , this will be the negative for Cameron if he were to win a majority .He likes the shield the Lib Dems give him .
I think the various financial scandals that have involved more than one of their elected politicians especially those elected to the European Parliament has damaged them badly. They certainly knew how to exploit the gravy train they criticised.
This goes to prove that you CAN fool some of the people all of the time. Galloway is a big favorite with the Asian community. He has been a consistent vocal supporter of the Palestinians and was a big mate of Sadam Hussein. This new job has come just in time following on from his redundancy at talkSPORT. I pray for Scottish independance when undesireables such as George Galloway can be deported from England merely on the grounds that their presence constitutes littering public places. Well, the last is merely a pipedream as even dodgy Scots can claim Human Rights
Links, the old adage says you can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but what you CAN'T do is fool all of the people all of the time.
The argument that because someone 'has the balls' or 'a tenacious & unrelenting style' affords their doggerel any credibility or gravitas is a weak one.Any fool can believe their own polemic, just look at any dictator throughout history. And no,before anyone goes mad,as much as I dislike the man I'm not comparing him to a dictator.
With Liberals polling nationally around 8% I'm not sure this is right. The decision to renege on their commitment to students over fees (+ some other policy flip flops) may have sent them back into political oblivion for generations to come. Deservedly in my view.
Super post Lincs. Fully agree. I am a paid up member of the SNP. I fully agree with Scottish Independance and the rebuilding of the wall. Galloway is a major twat. We are all struggling to get through this current crisis with what will probably be remembered as the worst of all governments. This idiot and the people of Bradford deserve each other.
Lincs, Not all Asians. His love affair with the Muslim community has put him at odds with a lot of Sikhs and Hindus who can probaby see him for what he is.

agreed BB .. now that we are stuck with him for a few years, at least his slippery presence may enliven a very staid and formulaic House of Commons. I am in favour of more 'independent' MPs, the problem is that only a very few self serving and (to my mind) undesireable seem to make it. I'd love to know where Galloway's financial backing comes from.

His whole political career has been based around fighting the lies and corruption of government and corporate Britain. He's a thorn in the side of the establishment and simply will not `tow the party line' if he thinks it's wrong.
Remember, this guy upsets a lot of people cos he exposes wrongs and asks questions a lot of powerful people don't want asked. Balls of steel. We've got VERY few MP's who are brave enough to rock the boat so I for one am very glad he's about. One thing is for sure, you won't catch him having covert shady meetings with business fat cats whilst being slipped brown envelopes under the table. He's squeaky clean, because he HAS to be.

Very true Draize, he is probably the most scrutinized Mp around. I think because of him being a thorn in the side as you said, he has been made to look like the fall guy by many major players inc Blair, Bush etc.
It is interesting to know that having met Saddam on 2 occasions, he is labeled as a good mate of his. Exactly the same number of meetings as Donald Rumsfeld had with him!
His win should serve as a wake-up call for the main parties but I suspect they will shrug it off in their usual complacent manner and say it was due to the Muslim electorate etc
However, if UKIP do well in the May elections then they may finally start to accept that a large proportion of the country are fed up of the big two/three parties
The man is a complete self serving twat but I think the result reflects the huge disillusionment by voters of all the main parties. Having said that this was an Asian vote for someone perceived by that community to be someone who would best represent them given his previous east London seat.
Those who say he is squeaky clean obviously don't know about his previous life as General Secretary of War on Want in the mid 80's where although an auditor cleared him of wrong doing he paid back £1,720 in contested expenses after a Daily Mirror investigation.
That charity then became insolvent two years after gorgeous George was elected to Parliament and in the period he led it the financial reports were felt by the charity commision to be 'materially mis-stated'.
He and Respect deal in sectarian and Communatarist politics, his whole pitch in Bradford was based on appealing to the muslim community, and making out that the other candidates had no regard for Muslim views.
This was from one of election leftlets
“God KNOWS who is a Muslim. And he KNOWS who is not. Instinctively, so do you. Let me point out to all the Muslim brothers and sisters what I stand for:
I, George Galloway, do not drink alcohol and never have. Ask yourself if you believe the other candidate in this election can say that truthfully.”

Made me laugh anyway!
