A Plymouth-supporting friend just told me that in the 90s, their local paper was also banned from attending Plymouth home games. They simply put a reporter in a huge crane and raised it outside the ground so they could cover match reports.
A bit of a shambles behind the scene there, typified by Mitchell's 4 letter rant on 6-0-6.
Small clubs need the support of their local rag, while coverage of the local football team is often a key source of readership for local papers, so it's all a bit silly.
My gran used to send AFC Bournemouth (dad's local club) clippings from the Echo every few months when I was growing up. They always seemed to give great coverage to the club.
If i owned the Echo i would pray the ban was a life one .....the club WILL NOT beat the paper they will learn the hard way especially with the end of season coming up --the Club will need the free press more in the close season ...not as tho they are premier material in the making .
Got a soft spot for Bournemouth after the fun weekends had down there the past two seasons.
Shame that its come to this really. Mitchell seems to think he really is invincible all because he brought the club back from the brink and that everyone should bow down to him.
Ironically enough The Echo has come in for a huge amount of flack from most Cherries fans over the years because they have (generally) taken a very soft approach to AFCB and not asked the difficult questions they could have. I guess that they may now take a more critical line in order to keep the readership up which could be interesting for Eddie Mitchell et al...the bloke is a walking, talking pr accident waiting to happen...well...slurring, staggering, anyway.
...BTW shouldn't this be on Moggie's official AFC Bournemouth thread?
Mitchell has brought the Russian chap in, who has the money. Very little of his own cash in there - the Russian has been involved from the start, he's only recently put his head above the parapet though.
Very embarassing for Bournemouth - that Mitchell fella really is a tool; I couldn't believe it when I heard him on 606 - how he can run a football club is a mystery.
I get the feeling that Bournemouth FC need the Echo more than the other way around....

Eddie Mitchell, a successful businessman, should have more awareness at to what the paper can do for his club.....
