Celtic to join League One

edited March 2012 in General Charlton

I see the Celts are talking about joining L1 in a bid to join the English League .

This is an interesting debate , I understand that the four Welsh clubs Cardiff , Newport County ,Swansea and Wrexham that play in English leagues and Chester whose pitch and three of the stands are in Wales are regarded by FIFA as English clubs and were banned from the Welsh FA Cup and qualifying for Europe .

I am against this proposal as it could lead to FIFA wanting to set up a GB team ,but if it were to happen then I think they need to start in L2 and work their way up .Also they wouldn't be able to qualify for CL /Eupopa League whilst in the lower leagues.

Could people please keep this thread to the discussion of whether Scottish clubs can join an English League rather than Old Firm abuse.

No they can't join in my opinion. The only way for Celtic or indeed Rangers to meet the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool in a domestic league game would be if and when a European Super League is launched.

The Welsh situation is a historical relic. I think Swansea were the last Welsh side to come into our league hierarchy and they did so in the early 1920s.

The English clubs won't want it (big sides will be wary of additional competition, smaller sides will rightfully be wary of their PL places being threatened). The FA won't want it. The PL won't want it. The SPL and SFA certainly won't want it. UEFA and FIFA won't want it.

The only parties that would be interested would by Sky and Celtic as they could make dollar out of it.

    Yes.

It should be the 4 main leagues of The United Kingdom.

    Premier League
    Championship
    League 1
    League 2

Just increase the totals by 2 teams per league and add a play off between each countries League winners. Adds more tv opportunities and more use of the big event stadiums like Wembley and The Millenium Stadium
  • Plymouth Argyle away at Inverness Caledonian Thistle has potential if this has any legs. Will always be talked about, but so many issues to overcome that I can't see it happening anytime in the near future.
  • Well, I've just searched on the internet and have found no such 'talking about joining L1 in a bid to join the English League .'
  • Why League 1 anyway?

If (and this is an if based on the fact it is never ever going to happen), they either join the PL or they join at the bottom don't they?

What's the logic in a halfway house?
  • Dazzler: So you'd have 26 teams in our league? 52 games a season? No thanks.

They have to make their league more competitive not talk about infiltrating ours. If they want to play elsewhere let them go play in the Norwegian league.
  • We'd still only bring about 300 fans...
  • I'm sure that at their board meetings they discuss all sorts of possibilities, but that doesn't mean that it's ever going to happen and nor should it.

  • The PL having a 42 game season amidst growing pressure for a relaxation in the number of international friendlies (which has been granted), for an English winter break, for reform of the League Cup as a competition.

Top players for clubs who go the distance in the cup competition would potentially be playing something like 60 games a season before you even consider international football.

    Doesn't work.

50 games but I take your point.

No one complained when Queens Park were in the F.A.Cup :o)
  • Why League One though? They should have to play in the Carlisle and District Pub League and work their way up.They were talking about it on the Sunday Supplement for quite a long time this morning, this makes me think that Sky might be interested and if they are it will happen as they run the game.
Would have been handy this season though having an away game less than an hour away from my house!

If Pompey get kicked out and Rangers go bust this could happen.. they would make up the missing spot when 3 go up from league 1 and only 2 come down.
  • When I saw this thread, I had to check the date, I thought 1st April was here already.

I guess League 1 is the equivalent standard to the SPL so it would make it easier for Celtic to integrate!!......anyway, no to Scottish teams joining English leagues.

Because they never won it. They lost to Blackburn Rovers in the Final (twice). Besides, how would you know if anyone complained - this was in the 19th Century.

  • Don't want to see them join the league but I wouldn't mind seeing a British Cup where you see Scottish, Welsh teams etc all in a competition maybe instead of the carling cup.

Won't be allowed. The powerhouse in English football is The Premier League. If Celtic and or Rangers were to join the football league then within six years they would be in The Premiership and once either had access to the money that comes with being in the Premier League they would no doubt be challenging up there with our current big boys. They have massive ( not as massive as Wednesday obviously) but massive support and I can't see our top Premier League clubs allowing it. Turkeys rarely vote for Christmas.
  • Alex Salmond wouldn't allow it unless the EPL was revised to the SPL. Perhaps the Scots should include a further question in their independent referendum?

  • Never believed this absolutely massive argument. How many people have either of the old firm as their second team? You only have to look on here to see people who support Charlton and Rangers/Celtic. Would people suddenly start supporting them over us or any other of the 91 English teams? Even if half did that's just under half of the old firms fan base gone.

Bring them down here and within 10 years theyll be mid table premier league scrapping out with the likes of Villa and Newcastle for a uefa cup spot and the odd run in the FA cup.

*unless a sugar daddy comes in and they become the next Chelsea/City
  • It will never happen . We don't want or need them . The last thing we need is religious bigotry in our leagues and that goes for the other side of Glasgow too.
  • No thanks.

The Scottish don't like the English, yet they want to join our league.
  • They've obviously heard that L1 is where the massive clubs are.

Not massive ? In a table of average home attendances in 2010 / 11 of european clubs Celtic are 12th with 48,968 and Rangers 22nd on 45,305

Only Manchester Utd and Arsenal of British teams have more than Celtic and only Man City and Newcastle more than Rangers.

I would say that's a significant amount of massiveness for anyone.

  • Stick 'em in the Irish League.
  • IF this is being seriously mooted and the Police have a say they will object on the grounds of safety blah blah blah. and not many clubs would welcome 5/6000 drunken jocks.
  • Stick 'em in the Irish League.
Agreed. Not a bad idea considering most Celtic fans think they are Irish
