The most embarrassing thing recently is how quiet English supporters are. Ajax and Bilbao support at Old Trafford was amazing. We used to be shit in Europe, but had brilliant support, now we're good, the support is utterly appalling
Utterly appalling? Sorry, thats cobblers. Spurs took over 10,000 to Milan twice and Madrid in the CL last year. Even at 4-0 down in Milan and Madrid you could only hear us.
The Bilbao fans are absolutely mental. We played them pre-season at WHL and they must have brough around 2-3,000 over just for a friendly. Walking down the Tottenham High Road surrounded by them was an experience.
Did any of the spurs stay to the end for a change?
away fans always pipe up more in these games , new ground syndrome will increase the numbers for some of these fixtures and it sounds brilliant when there are decent numbers with passion there too
......................................
but then again we wouldn't really know that
Don't you ever tire of making the same point over and over and over and over again.........................

Ipswich also took 10'000 to Inter, it doesn't make their fans special. Regarding Madrid, that was your first European Cup quarter final in how many years? Most sets of fans would have done the same.
For the record as well, Napoli took 3'000 to West Ham in a friendly and there it did kick off. Not sure whose fault that was, probably both sets of troglodytes.
Athletic Bilbao is treated by the Basques as the national team of the Basque region of Spain.
'The club is known for its cantera policy of bringing young Basque players through the ranks, as well as recruiting top Basque players from other clubs (like Joseba Etxeberria or Javi Martínez). Athletic official policy is signing professional players native to the greater Basque Country, including Biscay, Guipúzcoa, Álava and Navarre (in Spain); and Labourd, Soule and Lower Navarre (in France). Still, in recent times, this policy has been somewhat relaxed and players with direct Basque ancestry or with no Basque ancestry but formed in Basque clubs have played for the team. This has gained Athletic both admirers and critics. The club has been praised for promoting home grown players and club loyalty. Athletic is one of only four professional clubs in Spain (the others being Real Madrid, Barcelona and Osasuna) that is not a sports corporation; the club is owned and operated by its associates (socios).'

Didn't really kick off. Some handbags I think, west ham didn't really have anyone out, Napoli just strolled around. Bit like most teams do at Upton Park these days.
Reagrding the comments on support etc, are most home fans these days quiet? I reckon 9/10 you can hear the away fans singing at a stadium. A few exceptions of course, Stoke for example. So it's probably no suprise you could hear the Napoli fans last night.
nou camp is a classic example of home fans being quiet. I've never been there but on tv all you get is the same chant but for several different players...messi messi, xavi xavi, pedro pedro and of course barca barca. pathetic for their numbers.

I've been. It's very quiet. As was the Mestalla. Italian football on the other hand was a much better atmosphere.
I'm obviously on my own here, but I wouldn't fancy that bunch marching down Floyd Rd.
And as for '... parts of Napoli are a shit-hole.' I imagine compared to Charlton's tree lined boulevards, squares & cathedral they must be.
Read Gomorrah. An account of the organised crime in Naples and the surrounding areas. Never been, but I think the wrong parts of Woolwich, Charlton, Deptford etc don't quite compare to the wrong parts of Naples.

ive seen the film Gomorrah. its them challenging with the camorra. Camorra in Naples is the equivalent to the cosa nostra/Sicilian mafia. organised crime. prowper nawty bunch. the areas in the film are deprived to say the least. i guess the book would be more detailed than the film though.

Not seen the film, is it worth watching? The book was hard to follow at times, but some of it made for gruesome reading.

yeah its a good film. shows what seems to be a pretty accurate account of the poor areas of Naples and the pressures of being part of one of these crime gangs. I say accurate because of the facts/statistics that they bring up during the film of the violence that has happened over the last few years, not decreasing in the slightest. its a pretty good story about a few different people caught up in the crime. which if its the same as the book i presume that's why it was hard to follow as it switches from one character to another.
Naples is a beautiful beautiful city, however unlike most cities one street off from the main drag and you could be in trouble. 'Could' being the word as I've been there on a few occassions and never ever even had a whisper of any trouble, but there is that undercurrent gritty feeling about the place. And as every tour guide will tell you the whole city has been run by mafia families since time began?? Personally I think the undercurrent of gritty/crime' comes from the fact its a failry major port hence a lot of drugs and general traficing come through the area from north Africa, where there is the flow of drugs/un taxed goods there are ppl there to protect profits - not to attack and rob tourists!!!
Personally I loved Naples and would love to go back again, although its old with great looking buildings/architecture its a proper city where ppl live in all the side streets not just a tourist attraction. Its not been overly modernised to accomidate tourists. Its still proper Italy!!
A Napoli game is on the list, heard good things about the city, just keep your wits about you, but I think most people from any major city will be more than capable of that.

Chelsea 88 is still probably the most intimidating, scary (for a 9 year old) atmosphere I have ever been in both inside and outside the ground.
I thought their support was crap last night, unless you think singing the occasional 'carefree' whilst waving a flag is good.
All you could hear was Napoli.
