  • Bristol City 1994, last time I went by coach. Never getting on one again.
Yes, had to shield my young son and his mate under my coat from a barrage of missiles raining dowm on us! Remember signing 'You'll never get a ticket' on the way out for the replay at the 8k capacity three sided Valley in those days. Think they had had a tear up with the spanners the week before and thought we were fair game cockneys for revenge. Think it was Big fat Peter Garland who got the equaliser and booked for jumping on the railings in front of us.
I remember it turned sour because one of their players went down injured, they however carried on playing, no thought of stopping for the physio, the ball went out and Scotty Minto shaped to throw it back to them and Steve Gritt told him not to.
After this there was a barrage of stuff from the stand overlooking the away end. And all that separated us on the way out was a plastic police tape.

I and my 8 yo son ended up hiding in a front yard watching police horses, a helicopter and squads of riot police deal with the situation. Which in the end seemed to be Bristol C v Bristol Police.

Another game where I had to swear my son to silence or else his mum would stop him going away, or even to home games.

  • The cavalry charges in Smythe (?) park after the game were legendary.
A couple of us were using our Charlton scarves, matador style in the middle of complete mayhem.

Thanks guys I stand corrected on the goalscorer could have sworn it was Garland who got booked; who cares we took them back to Valley and put them out in the replay for good measure.
  • Last time I went on a coach to an away game was to sunderland, the journey dragged enough then we had to wait outside sunderland for a police escort for about an hour never even had time for a beer before the game, good job I had a 2 litre coke bottle half filled with vodka for the journey. Never used coach since.

    What is a hand shandy?

Was that the FA Cup game? With the near riot on the way out?

Blimey, was that 1994? I remember shielding my Dad from the barrage of objects coming our way outside.
We were well within our rights not to give 'em the ball back, they were quite happy to play on when they had it.

Oi Tony. I didn't know you and you're was at that game.

I took Gary and we stood on the opposite side of the road watching the action.

Mind you Gary was 10 at the time. It was don't tell your mum when we get home.
