"Thrashings"

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
I saw Saturday's game described as a "thrashing" in one of the reports at the weekend. It got me thinking - what constitutes a "thrashing"? After all, we lost by two goals, so does that mean we were thrashed by Colchester too?
If it's about goals conceded, would we still have been thrashed if we'd got a third goal?
Or is it about performance, because I don't remember anyone in the media saying we thrashed Arsenal at Highbury.
Don't know the answer, just wondered what people think!

  • I'd say losing by more than 3 goals constitutes a thrashing
  • Thought you'd have something more witty to say about thrashings
  • Thought you'd have something more witty to say about thrashings
    That would be beneath me
  • Yeah, I'd say anything over 3 or 4 goals too.
  • A few years ago I played for a team that won 13-2 one week, then lost 8-1 the next. Admittedly, the latter result was against a team four divisions above us in the cup, but they were 'proper' thrashings. Anything less than three goals can't possibly be considered a 'thrashing'. If that were the case, every 2-0 win would be called a 'thrashing' - which is patent nonsense.
  • Four or more, even then if Man Utd beat Barnet 4-0 I would not consider that a thrashing, so it can depend on the opposition.
  • We got thrashed by leeds that time. 6-1 is a proper thrashing.
  • A thrashing is surely when you've been totally outplayed, and little to offer...... I would consider 3-0 as soundly beaten but not a thrashing; losing 5-0 when it could have been 10 ..... yep, that's a thrashing.

    But to concede 4 basically breakaway goals from just 4 chances in the 1st half, and then to dominate the 2nd half after pulling 2 goals back .... no way is that a thrashing.

  • I'm not convinced that you can always put numbers on it. Whilst the scoreline is usually a good indicator of the gulf between two teams' perfomances, it doesn't always follow. For me a thrashing is more about the style of the defeat than the actual number of goals.

    Of Saturday's game I would say that we were getting a good thrashing, but put a stop to it in the second half.

    To get beat by 4 goals is a thumping, 5 is a thrashing. 6 is a trouncing

  • After 38 minutes we were being thrashed!
  • Three examples of thrashings received where you felt sorry for Charlton;

    Brighton away 1983 0-7
    QPR away 1983 1-5
    Nottingham Forest away 1986 0-4 (we hardly touched the ball, let alone have a chance of scoring!)

    Three examples of thrashings dished out where you felt sorry for the opposition;

    Peterboro' home 1990something 5-1
    Man City home 1986 5-0
    Camb Utd home 1984 5-2

    Once played in a youth team that lost 18-0 and 11-0. We were still in both of those with 89 minutes to go....
  • First game in the prem 5-0 to us against Saints, with two goals for us ruled out for offside. That was a thrashing.

    I tend to think a thrashing starts at 4-1, where as 3-0 is a sound beating with the same goal difference. 2-4 is definitely not a thrashing but we could say we were thrashed in the first half!
  • The 4-0 at home to man city in prem league was a thrashing. That day could have been 8 or 9, was please though as had 4-0 at 50/1 I think.

    It seems to me that many 4-0 scorelines become 4-1 at the last knockings. It's like the winning team feels sorry for their opponents and says, now the games nearly over we'll take it easy and give them the chance of a consolation.
  • I hate to say it but 4-0 against the hamsters, Pardew vs Curbs, was a thrashing. West Ham never had a kick. All the more so because nobody dared dream of such a performance before the game. How could it all go so wrong after that?
