Five man midfield

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
As it seems we struggle against teams who are playing with a 5 man midfield, I was just wondering how you guys think we should counter-act this problem?

The two options I see are: 4-5-1 which would mean dropping either BWP or Kermorgant, or 3-5-2 which would probably mean dropping Solly and playing wiggins as the left sided midfielder.

Neither of these options appeals to me. So anyone got any suggestions? It's all very well us making excuses after the game that our midfield was (yet again) over-run but I for one am struggling to think of a solution to this.

  • bradders could play up top on his own, kermy would be ok at holding it up but there wouldnt be anyone to flick it on to, and we still dont have an out and out playmaker with skill and an eye for a killer pass ala andy reid, claus ect.. pritchard looks to have some nous going forward so maybe give him a go as the 'playmaker; in a 5 man midfield.
  • I think we do need to play 4-5-1 sometimes. Paul Hayes would be the perfect striker for this as he holds it up well and brings others into play.
    Hughes Holding
    Jackson and Hollands Centre
    Pritchard and Haynes wide
  • Now that Powell's brought Haynes in we have the option of moving Jackson into the centre. Skip's done a great job out wide but he is in danger of being frozen out sometimes, and he's so much more influential in CM. Ideally I'd be playing a 4-4-2. Keep the back 4 and play Jackson and Hollands/Stephens in the middle, flanked by Haynes and Wagstaff. Then play BWP and Hayes up top, because their partnership was deadly earlier in the season. Of course now Hayes is at wycombe and Kermo has done so well, you could play 4-4-1-1 with Yann in the hole behind BWP; but I think 4-4-1-1 does narrow your options significantly.
The other option could be 4-3-3. A midfield trio of Jackson, Hollands and Stephens/Russell, with BWP up top flanked by Green/Wagstaff and Haynes. This however has the potential to leave BWP isolated. So maybe Kermo/Hayes if he was here would be better. Thoughts?
  • Full backs need to push up so that midfield isn't over-run. When we have the ball we need to play more diagonal balls into the corners for the forwards and wingers to run onto.

    I'd go:

    --------------Hamer
    Solly Taylor Morrison Wiggins
    Wagstaff Hollands Hughes Haynes
    --------------Kermy
    --------------BWP
  • If I was the gaffer I'd play either BWP or YK as the lone striker, Andy Hughes behind Stephens and Hollands so they can bomb forward and keep JJ and Waggy on the wings. Simples.

    4-3-2-1?
  • Time for a 6 man midfield, perhaps, to outwit these 5 man midfield teams.

I like how you think good sir.
  • We dont need a 5 man midfield, just need to drop Stephens for a more defensive player.

    Green/Waggy - Hollands - Pritchard/Hughes/Russell - Jackson

My view was, that Notts played 4-4-1-1. and Judge (14) caused all the problems in the hole behind the lone CF. One of the Cent Mids needed to drop deep and fill the space he was operating in and one of the front players then needed to work back to balance up the midfield. For whatever reason, we failed to adjust.

We also failed to defend from the front throughout the first half allowing Notts to play out of the defensive third, take advantage of the extra man in midfield, and pull the centre backs wide and apart before playing passes in behind.

I'm guessing Curle changed his system based on the scouting report from the Colchester game. Equally CP would have set the team up to play against 4-4-2 as Notts used that system at Tranmere last week, so was caught out a bit, (although the one out and out striker on the team list would have been a clue)

We're getting out-battled in central midfield at the moment and need to defend better from the front.
A more combative central midfield ( hollands-Russell or hollands-Hughes), would probably cope better in a 2v3 battle.

Scunthorpe have lined up in a 4-5-1 to 4-3-3 system in their last 2 games. CP will no doubt cover them at Yeovil on Tuesday.
