Change of strategy for today's game

Being deprived of the opportunity of attending matched on a regular basis I have fallen into a routine of tuning in every Saturday at 4pm and I like to quietly comsume a pint or two of good ale whilst doing so - what I refer to as "football beer".

Two weeks ago on the morning of the Stevenage game I was sniffing around the monoply looking for something different on the back of a couple of home draws and was delighted to discover some bottles of Old Tom on the shelf. "This", I thought, "is just the ticket" and it certainly was, and didn't taste bad either.

On Tuesday I had no Old Tom an the outcome was there for all to see, so today I am officially changing the strategy: Old Tom is good for your football.

The landlady in the Castle in Manchester would never serve Old Tom in whole pints and to be fair it is rather strong and not a beverage for queching your thirst in but today I think it has to be 2 bottles - one for me and one for Steve - and I also believe my new strategy will inspire the team to two goals - on each a piece all round.

  • Clearly not working

  • Maybe the team had some today
  • The problem was I ddn't have time to open the first bottle before the goals started pouring in. Don't really fancy it now

I only got 6 bottles! Hardly enough to do the trick

  • Hurry up and drink those last 4 please :o)
  • Hamer has been on the bottle evidently
  • It's an uphill battle but I'm drinking as fast as I can!

Hi Kev :-) You need to start drinking well before kick off in future :-)
    In fact start now :-)
  • That's good advice, Jon!

One of the very few advantages of a state wine monopoly is that there's also only one source of information you need to check, so I'll just go on the internet and check the stock and work out if there are enough bottles of Old Tom in Sweden to keep me going to next Saturday

  • Next time you are at a home game let me know and I'll help you in your heroic quest to drink the Addicks to victory :-)
  • May 5th I think.

By the way there are 548 33cl bottles in Stockholm county so I don't think I will need to travel any further afield to get supplies but I might be struggling to sober up in time to be let on a plane on May 3rd.
  • Do they restrict how many you can buy at once though Hugo? You might need to start stocking up just to be on the safe side.

Not any more. I have heard tell that in years gone by they used to log your personal identity number and you used to get a nasty letter through the post if they thought you were consuming too much. Now, thankfully, they only refuse if you either can't prove your age (and it's a constant source of disappointment to me that they never ask me to do that) or appear to be drunk.

So basically, as long as I leave the consumption until the purchases are complete, the main issue is that I need to think of a good excuse why I can't come to work on Monday because I have to hoover Stockholm dry of Old Tom, and there are a good number of outlets to visit (78 in all):

  • Consider it a mission, my good fellow, the promotion of a team in SE7 may depend upon it. ;-)
  • I've never been one to shirk a duty.

Royal Oak May 5th it is!

Better get in there on 3rd - you might just get served before kick off.
