Arsenal agree deal for Podolski

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
Un-bloody-believable signing, has more bloody energy than Modric, and scores like a mo-fo when happy. What a massive difference to the witless midgets he's signed for years.

Yes I know he struggled at Bayern but still scored a very reasonable amount. Is excellent and intelligent in a fluid 4-5-1, 4-3-3. Let's face it he doesn't have much to live up to with Arshavin, Rosicky, and Walcott. He's so perfectly suited to the Prem. If they sort out their defence, and Wilshire comes back, I'm afraid they'll be streets ahead Tottenham next season. Tottenham desperately need to get that fourth place whatever this season, otherwise we'll get the usual Redknapp fallout of a club teetering on financial meltdown and having to be bought out.

  • Very good signing, however they must now have the most left-footed strike force in history!!

As you say "when happy", interesting that he's signed for a German speaking manager who seems to understand how to get the best out of wayward talents.

But...he had a few years at Bayern Munich after joining them from Koln and he struggled to adapt to their style of football. They wanted a goal scorer who would do little else but put the ball in the back of the net Gerd Muller style, but he didn't score often enough for a centre forward so Bayern Munich signed Luca Tony and they shifted him to the wing/inside left where he was used to run into the box and feed on scraps. After three seasons they flogged him back to Koln where he was happier. He does well for Germany in tournaments but his form in run of the mill internationals and qualifiers is more average.
  • I said he'd be a great signing for them on the Arsene Wenger thread, and he will be. He's big and strong enough to play the more physical stuff, and if you think Van Persie can hammer a ball then you haven't seen anything yet!

Problem is, they also need a left back, a centre back to partner a fit Vermaelen, two new wide players, another creative player to give Wilshere some competition and about 8 squad players who are better than the current tosh like Chamakh, Arshavin, Gervinho and Squillaci

Big 'if' though - Wenger's not managed it since the Lauren, Campbell, Toure, Cole defence of almost ten years ago. I like Koscielny, but he's needed to be the junior defender and he's been pratically the main man most of this season. I think him and Vermaelan can be a good partnership but they need much better competition in there, plus a new left back.

I don't agree about Spurs - think if Spurs can sign Adebayor up, they've got a better squad than Arsenal's, and would have even with the signings above and Podolski - though Arsenal's first XI may be better then.

And as for money, I think Spurs is very well run within budget, not sure why you think they need Champs Lge football.
  • Its going to take a lot more than one signing to get Arsenal back on track.
  • Yes, but you have to start somewhere - I think it's a good signing. Getting Van Persie to sign a new contract is easily the best signing they could make, but I think it's be hard.

They a huge clearout too - there's a whole lot of average players in the squad.

Indeed, signings like this are needed if they are to stand a chance of keeping RVP
  • Great signing.

The problem with Spurs is that without champ football they can not keep the likes of Carrick, Berbatov and now Bale/Modric. Essentially their marquee players will go. This is not just down to back office finances.... Clubs that don't run on a financial footing, such as Chelsea and Man City are always willing to pay just that little more debt. Spurs a wage cap of 65k a week to their stars, there are plenty of teams worldwide who pay more.

Adebayor will never go to Tottenham, he knows that and has pretty much stated it. Man City have already said they will not support his wage again for Tottenham.

Tottenham are an excellently run club. They have been growing turnover year on year, at least until last seasons financial results. In 2010 they made a 6.5 million loss. In 2011 they made a small profit of a few hundred thousand. However year on year their operating costs have massively increased; and they will be even more as you always have to re-negotiate contracts only one way if the players are doing well. Last season they would have made a significant loss without Champ League money. Whilst selling O'Hara, getting Keane's wages off the books, Crouch, Palacios, and Woodgate as well is good. Adebayor, Saha, Friedel, Nelsen, and Parker fill some of that gap. On top of this they would have right downs on valuation of pretty much all the players above bar Crouch; unless their player amortisation is spot on. The advantage is that those signed are mainly on shorter contracts and can be shifted if all fails. The Swiss rambler talks about Spurs with great financial analysis:

Levy is often saying they may have to cut costs without Champ league football. I for one hope they make the top four this season. At least we can watch an exciting English side in Europe then. But if they don't make it, then Modric will be sold, and it will be hard to get the same calibre of striker as Adebayor. Modric sold, means another transition year but hopefully not as disastrous as the one after Berbatov going.
  • Isn't he left footed? Think Van Persie may be leaving.

  • OK, Colin, see what you mean - not that they'd be in financial trouble, but that they may lose big players and struggle - agree more there!

    Luckily I think they'll get 3rd!
  • Left footed but better off a striker. I too NLN hope they get third. In recent years they're one of the only teams I'd pay to watch in the prem.
  • Charlton are the only team i'd pay to watch in the prem , RVP is off if this is confirmed , they were talking about it on Talksport last week.
  • I think RVP will stay.
  • Well it's a great signing if they keep RVP, otherwise they will stay exactly where they are for the 5th/6th year in a row.

You are assuming that this is their only big signing then ?
  • Who the f**k gives a rats arse what or who the Goonershit sign or not? unless you actually wanna be one.

Long long long may their pain continue.

your exaggerating there, a front 3 of Walcott, Podolski and RVP is pretty good, as is a central midfield of Ramsey, Song and Wilshere. They then have Vermaelen, Sagna, Gibbs and Koscielny in defence and their keeper is good. Most of that team are getting better every season. I agree they need to improve their squad but that team is up there with the best in the league.

    RPV Podolski TheOX
    Ramsey Wilshere
    Song
    Kibbs Vermalean Hummels Sagna
    Scnezny

Absolute mint team if they just sort out CB
Gervinho and Walcott backup aint to bad either
  • yer and I do think Koscielny is getting better, so having him as 3rd choice cb would be ok. Arteta, Gervinho, Walcott on bench. Couple more decent signings, cm and full back and thats not a bad squad at all

Thats the nature of the beast.

To keep Modric (and Bale too most likely), we need CL football. Simple as that. Levy has always said we cut our cloth accordingly. We're not financially dependant on CL football for survival, but we're dependant on European football to entice the better quality players and to keep hold of those that we've brought to the club.

Levy's got his head screwed on. He was never going to spend big money in the last transfer window when the likelihood was that Harry would take the England job after the Euro's (or even before as it is now!) Thats why Saha and Nelsen were brought in on 6 month deals with options to extend them. If and when Harry goes, there's a sizeable transfer kitty in place for a new manager. The club is run well these days, unlike in the 80s, early 90s when we very nearly went to the wall thanks to Irving Scholar & Co.
  • Wots this all about? Is the transfer window open again?
  • Over my head. Never even heard of him.

Is he good enough for League One?

    ;o°
  • Oh dear , thats awful.

He looks about 5, can't sing and doesn't know the words,
    X-factor hopeful?
  • Aww bless. How can you take him seriously with a back-drop of bart simpson wallpaper?

No wonder they don't sing at Arsenal....................
  • Does this mean we're in the running to sign Diesel Van Man Persie ?
