top of table - last fifteen seasons

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
the table shows the max. points from the last 15 seasons for each position (League One/Second Division):

1. 101 points (Fulham 1999)
2. 92 points (Southampton 2011)
--------------------------------------------------------------
3. 87 points (Huddersfield 2011, Franchise 2009)
4. 84 points (Charlton 2010, Leeds 2009)
5. 82 points (Swindon 2010, Millwall 2009, Oldham 2003, Millwall 2000)
6. 82 points (Stoke 2000)
--------------------------------------------------------------
7. 80 points (Tranmere 2003, Bristol Rovers 2000) - usually less than 75 points

Just one more win to effectively ensure minimum of play-offs.

And 3 more wins and a draw for automatics based on the maximum points tallies!
  • Only a few weeks ago the top 5 in League 1 were averaging 2 points a game over the whole season (aided by the Addicks being slightly above that mark). On that basis it looked like the hurdle for promotion might be higher this season.
Now the Addicks have upped the pace and the other four are faltering. The only record on that table that looks in danger is Fulham's.
  • Colchester came second with 79 points a few seasons back.
  • So 88 points would have sealed 2nd spot for the last 15 years. 10 more points then.

two ways to read it, if Huddersfield had got 91 points in 2011 they still wouldn't have got 2nd is Saints still had 92, so I read it the other way and say 92 points has always been top 2.

  • You should always look at the third place as it doesn't matter what the second placed team got - getting one more point that the third placed side is what you need to get to come second.
  • True, Muttley. You only need 1 more point more than the 3rd placed club.
  • I'll celebrate if and when we attain 92 points or more.

If that isn't good enough for second then frankly the other teams above deserve it.
  • in 2011 from Southampton's perspective 88 points would have been enough, but from Huddersfield's perspective even 91 points would have been insufficient.
Having said that it is fair to say that in the last 15+ years no team getting 88+ points has finished below 2nd.

    So cautious, Len.

  • I don't want to disparage your work Salad, but surely past seasons are irrelevant? All that matters is the number of points needed to secure promotion this season, which we won't know until the end.
  • Is 101 points the best? I thought that some-one on another thread that Reading had got 105 or 106. Or was that longer ago

Epsom you do make a fair point, but I dont think they are irrelevant, try telling anyone that 38/40 points is irrelevant for Premiership survival, this figure is based on historic standings. The previous seasons act as a very reliable indicator for how this season will also end up, bookies who have a lot to loose will certainly use these sort of things when setting odds.

They did, but that was the division above.
  • Reading got 106 - the record points total in England. The most we can get is 114, so doable if very tough.
  • If you just look at Division 1 since its inception in 2004
The average points over the last 7 seasons for the top 6 places has been as follows
    1st place 93 points with a high of 98 and a low of 82
    2nd place 86 points with a high of 92 and a low of 79
    3rd place 82 points with a high of 87 and a low of 76
    4th place 80 points with a high of 84 and a low of 73
    5th place 77 points with a high of 83 and a low of 72
    6th place 75 points with a high of 82 and a low of 71

Statistically we are already in the play-offs but there are still
too many games to go until it is guaranteed.
  • cant beleive that against col u tomorrow we can smash the 80 point mark, that is some achievement in the first week of march!!!!!!
  • It's still possible to beat both Fulham and Reading's records. It seems that they both tailed off a bit towards the end. Presumably they relaxed once promotion was achieved. I thinks that's probably the biggest danger for us in terms of trying to beat their records.

.....Or a far superior goal-difference.............Oh, that'll be us then. ;-)

It is all about the gap and games counting down. I think a realistic pronotion date is 7 games to go where our lead over third will have to exceed 21. Basically if we go on a run of wins, that is quite possible. 7 games to go Orient home (22 point gap needed), 6 games Oldham away (19 point gap needed), 6 games Walsall home (16 point gap needed).

    True.

Fulham did quite well in their last 8 games: stats.football365.com/1999/ENG/D2/oform

But there are probably many examples of teams who were on target for >100 points until they crossed the promotion line and then tailed off badly - or crashed, I can think of one in the Championship: stats.football365.com/2000/ENG/D1/oform
