Most memorable game for me regarding penalties (ignoring Wembley), was when Brighton had a 3 times taken penalty against us at The Valley in about 77. Brighton were top (ish) & we were about 6th. It was the Hales, Flanagan, Powell, Peacock team.
Peter Ward (who played for England), had his penalty saved twice (he may have missed) by Jeff Wood & then Brian Horton their captain took the 3rd & scored.
Charlton were 1-3 down & came back to win 4-3 in front of about 18,000. It was an evening game, when we usually got less than 10,000.

Good shout CE; one of my all time favourite Charlton games too.

One of the classic seventies matches without a doubt. As Max Boyce used to say around the same time or a bit before I was there!

And mine, Covered End. That Paddy Powell piledriver from 25 yards as he cut in from the right wing - what a strike for the winner! Can still see it in my minds eye.

Remember it well, fantastic game! A few days later on the Saturday was the Tottenham game 4.1 with a Flanagan hat-trick in the space of about 10 minutes.
Newcastle at home around 1977-78. We won 4.1 after going 1.0 down in the first sixty seconds. I remember Lawrie Madden skied one over the bar at the open end(south stand). Terrible penalty!
Can`t remember who took the 2nd one which was our equaliser. Anyone know?
Wasn't it Killer? I seem to remember the entire team had taken it in turns and that after Madden it was back to the start again.
The thing about that Madden penalty was the he looked so utterly confident - just strolled up and casually put it out of the ground. A true classic.
If I remember rightly, we beat Snowdown Colliery in the Metropolitan League in the 60s by (about) 6-3. I think we scored three penalties - a short bloke scored all three, I think - Amato?
Well 3 times taken penalty against Sunderland about 1971,away team late arriving at The Valley due to Blackwell Tunnel tailback.Think Ray Tracey took 2, 1st scored but had too be retaken as keeper moved, then missed retaken kick but once again keeper was to quick off the mark.3rd time lucky Panl Went scored at The Heights End.Keeper was the great Jimmy Montgomrey and game finished 2-2.

Yes, I thought I was a gonna, when Powell scored the winner. I was about 15 & was standing with my school mates, in a packed Covered End, at the back, just above the stair exit. Somehow, in the delirium, I ended up hanging over the stairwell, head facing down. If I'd fallen, it was probably a 15 foot drop, on to the stairs head first.
I still don't know how I ended up in that position and who pulled me back up by my legs.
Remeber this but had to check it first.Preston North End last game of season missed two penalties in 4 minutes Bob Curtis and Harry Gregory we LOST 0-1.First game following season another two penalties in the game Paul Went missed the first before Alan Campbell scored the winner from the spot.History 3 spot kicks missed on the trot against PNE,both games played at The Valley.
That was the last game of the 1968-69 season - remember word was spreading around the big East terrace that Palace were winning 3-0 and would be promoted, and Charlton couldn't then catch them.
The first game of the next season, do I remember Ray Crawford scored twice? it was a great start to the 1969-70, but after hanging on desperately to beat Sheff Utd 3-2 after winning 3-0 and coasting it, our season collapsed beginning with a 5-0 hammering at Swindon. And just escaping relegation.
The last game of the season still in with a chance to be promoted to Division 1,if only....two words....aworld apart and had it happened 40000plus gates at the Valley and the team we had was good enough too stay in that division for sometime.Youth players that had a charlton background and history to them,Went .Reeves.Campbell,Curtis ,Warman and Booth. So sad it went pear shape on Firmani.
